If the past is a foreign country, then you should visit it for the same reasons you travel: to see new things, to break out of routine, to humble yourself and remember (in the best way) that you’re not that special. by @chadcomello

Horror has had a remarkable run in the 21st century. Between viral phenomena like The Blair Witch Project, the rise of Saw-inspired torture porn, critically acclaimed arthouse fare like Hereditary, and surprise box-office smashes like Obsession, it’s never been easier to find yourself a cinematic scare.

Meanwhile, @chadcomello was doing his darndest to avoid all of it.

“Why, I thought, should I willingly subject myself to violent images and terrifying scenarios that would haunt my dreams and keep me ever looking over my shoulder?”

But he eventually realized he might be missing something. “So many of my fellow cinephiles also loved horror, and not just for cheap thrills. Maybe it’d be worth braving the genre’s haunted house to see what I might uncover.”

Here are the horror movies that brought him into the dark and showed him the light 👉 by @chadcomello

This might ruffle some feathers in the book community, but I’ve found reading Cliff Notes alongside a challenging text can be a really rich experience. The key is it shouldn’t replace your reading, only supplement or enhance it. What do you think?

Find a favorite author’s website and use their contact form to send them a message with specifics about why you like them.

I’ve done this several times. The nice thing is they’re usually accessible and responsive, depending on the their level of fame.

You can do this over social media, but a mere “Love your work!” doesn’t have the same effect as a more detailed note, which both proves you’re actually a fan and gives them the fuel to keep going and making more stuff you enjoy.

Once, directed by John Carney, is fairly easy to describe. An Irish busker (Glen Hansard) meets a young woman (Markéta Irglová) on the streets of Dublin and they grow close as they play music together, discuss their bruised loves, and inspire each other as they enter new phases of life.

But such a tidy description belies the miles-deep emotional undercurrent that runs beneath this story and propels the main characters—who remain unnamed and are credited as Guy and Girl—first toward each other and ultimately onto their individual fates.

Should he get back with his ex-girlfriend in London? Is her floundering marriage worth repairing? That undercurrent surfaces not through melodramatic speeches or contrived conflicts, but through the music they share.

Probably because the film’s core of Carney, Hansard, and Irglová are real musicians, they capture both the tedium and thrill of creating meaningful music—and, by extension, art—better than almost anything I’ve seen.

They do so by paying close attention to moments in the songwriting process that are small but significant: assembling snatches of melody, hearing someone add harmony to your song for the first time, finding replacement Discman batteries so you can finish your lyrics, and nailing a song on the first take.

These little euphorias add up. With what Guy and Girl accumulate together, they give each other gifts they couldn’t have imagined before meeting: she helps him record his songs and find the confidence to move forward, while he reignites her passion for playing.

It was goodbye in the best way, with grace and gratitude for what they meant to each other.

What I took with me after seeing Once for the first time was how people can come into each other’s lives, knowing their time together will end, yet still choose to make something wonderful with the moments they have.

That’s what music can do, and what art can do, and what grace can do if we let it. That’s what Glen Hansard’s music did for me.

Rest in peace, Glen. You sang your melody, and you can rest assured knowing we’ll keep singing along.

I created this motto 12 years ago, inspired by @michael.pollan’s “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” principle, as a librarian and lover of books and someone who wants to stave off brainrot. Here’s what it means to me 👇

READ BOOKS — there’s a difference between books and everything else on the internet you can read. Listicles/tweets/threads can fill up your time without filling you up.

OFTEN — the easiest way to do this is to read what you actually want to read, not what you think you *should* read. Stop reading books you don’t like.

MOSTLY PRINT — I have and enjoy my e-reader, but the less screentime you have the better. Words on paper are an ancient technology that’s still underrated.
