How is HOCUS POCUS - a movie with child-offing witches, a reanimated corpse, and kids turned into undead cats - still one of the coziest family movies ever made?

The answer, according to @erinpgoldie’s latest essay, is the real horror: nostalgia.

FJORD, Cristian Mungiu’s new Palme d’Or-winning film (in theaters this weekend!) dares to question whether our human invention of judging right and wrong is, in fact, right. It’s a revelation that shook @__madigancorrine__ hard and got her questioning her own concept of morality.

This is the first installment of our new series Confession Stand, where Madigan shares candid, sometimes risky lessons she’s learned from movies. Read her full piece at cinemasugar.com!

👋 ABOUT MADIGAN
Madigan Will is an NYC-based entertainment writer and script reader who has somehow turned her random knowledge of Alfred Hitchcock and Emma Stone into a career. From working with media giants like AMC Global Media to covering news and reviews for some of the biggest movies on streaming, she is excited to be taking more of her movie obsessions to Cinema Sugar. Madigan believes every movie has something to leave behind—however good or bad—and hopes the lessons, questions, and random thoughts she takes from them will connect with some other wild little cinephile out there too.

Horror has had a remarkable run in the 21st century. Between viral phenomena like The Blair Witch Project, the rise of Saw-inspired torture porn, critically acclaimed arthouse fare like Hereditary, and surprise box-office smashes like Obsession, it’s never been easier to find yourself a cinematic scare.

Meanwhile, @chadcomello was doing his darndest to avoid all of it.

“Why, I thought, should I willingly subject myself to violent images and terrifying scenarios that would haunt my dreams and keep me ever looking over my shoulder?”

But he eventually realized he might be missing something. “So many of my fellow cinephiles also loved horror, and not just for cheap thrills. Maybe it’d be worth braving the genre’s haunted house to see what I might uncover.”

Here are the horror movies that brought him into the dark and showed him the light 👉 by @cinemasugar
