I wanted to let everyone know that I will be back in Halifax after my European travels this week. I will be taking appointments from July 18th for those that would need a session or require a follow up from your previous session prior to my travels. I am currently scheduled to be in the city until mid-September but I always want to be transparent that last minute contracts can sometimes arise on short notice which may require me to be away. However, at the moment, there is a 2-month window that I will be seeing clients. As we have operated in the past, please reach out either by email or via message where we have communicated previously to discuss with me when you would like to be seen ideally. There is no pressure to take action but please note, that spots do tend to fill up quickly. I look forward to seeing some of you again and helping you reach your health goals. After a busy few months on the road with a show, I decided to do some traveling and spend the month of May in Australia. It was my fourth time in the country and it never fails to deliver. This time around I went to Brisbane which is one of my favourite cities. The nature views and river pathway infrastructure there makes the lifestyle of a runner an absolute dream. Visiting friends and connecting with former colleagues to explore is always satisfying and there is so much to do. Even though it was Australian winter, the weather there tops most east coast Canadian days. I enjoyed a great beach and hiking weekend in Noosa which was a new spot to visit and it is fantastic. Then I did a visit and tour with a good friend from the University of Queensland. The campus grounds are breathtaking and so lush and green. The individuals in the Performance Science Department are pioneers in the field and are doing incredible things in preparation for their hosting of the Olympics in 2032. I had the extreme pleasure of being part of the medical team that helped prepare the show closure of Cirque du Soleil’s ice show Crystal. This was the my first experience working on an arena show and while it was sad to see it come to an end, everyone involved completed their journey with the jaw dropping performances you would expect.
Something that you may not know about Cirque productions is that all shows have something called “animation” prior to a show’s start. It’s simply a way to entertain the audience as they file in and find their seats as well as introduce some characters and almost always involves interaction with the audience. When Crystal was confirmed to be closing, the tour production allowed the staff to take part in animation if we wanted. As someone who has chosen a profession that is predominantly behind the scenes, I had to take advantage of the chance to share the stage (in this case ice) with these incredible artists. Having been a hockey player most of my life, being on skates was very natural to me. However, being on stage means you have to look the part…and that means wardrobe and makeup. This was different for me but our extremely talented head of Wardrobe gave me a cool costume and did my makeup flawlessly making me feel like a true artist. I had my colleague Antonio snap some pics of me as proof and the Extreme Skater boys even let me extend my appearance by inviting me join in on some hockey puck passing around just before the show started. An absolutely unforgettable experience and core memory to be able to say that I was involved with an actual Cirque du Soleil show performance. When we were touring in Colorado, I connected with the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and we had a great opportunity to do a knowledge exchange with members of their high performance team (Athletic Trainer, Sports Psych, Sport Chiro, Sports Massage). I had the chance to also do this back in 2015 with my previous show and it was so beneficial I wanted to share it again. This time we had my PMed partner, our artistic director, and some artist coaches join us for the exchange. Their facilities are incredible and a testament to why their Olympic program is so successful. The hospitality from the group was so appreciated.
The next day, I took on the Manitou Incline for my third time but first in 10 years. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s a gruelling hike up 2769 steps over a straight distance of 1.8km. You gain 655m of elevation (while already starting at 1990m) and the maximum grade at some points is 68%. It’s ridiculous when you see it, but worth every bit of effort. I did it this time around with my guy @johannyvelasquez who crushed it as we made it to the top in under 42 minutes. Our Uber ride to the trail was particularly entertaining and I’ll let you see why in the 6th slide. After taking in the views at the top, we decided to run down the 4.8km trail off to the side which returns you back as they don’t recommend descending down the steps for clear reasons. So as the winter and spring rolled on with the tour, we had some great weekly stops in some cities I hadn’t been to before. We played in Salt Lake City Utah and the scenery and running there was amazing with the cherry blossoms by the state house. I was able to catch an Utah Jazz game one night and I also had the honour to meet and connect with the Sports Medicine staff from the University of Utah. They graciously asked me to speak to their students in the Master’s AT program about tour life which was so much fun. I then hosted the students for an afternoon of watching training while answering questions, before they watched the show that night. I even had one student eager about performing arts do a full day of shadowing with me covering the show which was special. Speaking to students is something I’ve done for many years now on tour when the opportunity arises and it brings me so much joy to share some knowledge I’ve picked up along my career path. I look forward to it every time. Thank you so much for the hospitality and time with all of you.
Next up, we had a stop in Phoenix so I went to Arizona State University and I was able to meet and connect with the athletic trainers from baseball and softball. I appreciate them taking the time to chat and let me catch a game. Brought me back to my years before Cirque when I worked at a university…I missed those outdoor times when the weather was nice.
Then we had a later start in our next city so with a few extra days, I made a quick stop up to Las Vegas to meet up with colleagues at Cirque’s Vegas Rehab Clinic, get in some sweet morning runs along the strip and also see the Sphere of the first time. It also allowed me a chance to watch some shows and meet up with some of my former artists. It was awesome to see them doing amazing things in their acts in MJOne, Mystere, Absinthe, Mad Apple and “O”. Hey everyone, it’s been too long! I’ve been super slack on keeping up with posting. Let me re-introduce myself. I’m Chad and I’m an Athletic Therapist based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. I’ve been fortunate to be in this field for over 25 years now. Currently, I provide private in-home services with my mobile business and I have been working in performing arts for 15 years. Currently I’ve been doing travel work with Cirque du Soleil as a fly-in therapist worldwide and also serving as the Director of Shipboard Operations remotely for Next Stage Performance out of Orlando where we place full time medical providers on ships with Virgin. I’m going to showcase some of my experiences from the past year to get people caught up.
Back in late 2024 I had the opportunity to be on one of Cirque’s most classic shows Kooza and work with @juliaglipari at one of the greatest tent sites on the planet…Santa Monica pier. I got to do an exchange with Red Bull Performance Center, do some cool PR on the pier, catch some football games at So-Fi and get some great hikes in. I also got to have one of my ship therapists @julia_kupfert come and visit for a shadow experience.
Then I had the extreme honour to work on Crystal to close out the year and into January, a Cirque ice show which ended up closing later that year. Here, I was able to work with my home-slice @neimortm . This tour brought me the closest I’ve ever worked to my home area and I was able to invite and share it with my mentor Tara Sutherland who is responsible for so much of my path and success.

Just returned from a last minute 2-week work trip to Madrid with Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria. I’m always so grateful for the opportunity to work with these incredible artists and staff with the show. I will post more in the coming days but wanted to showcase some beautiful nature and architecture I experienced on a morning run into Parque del Retiro. I’ve been back for about a week now after an unexpected opportunity to do a contract in Saudi Arabia. I spent two weeks on a special project with Cirque in Damman, KSA. The experience was incredible. The entire cast and production crew were so welcoming to me as this was the first time they had a therapist with them. This is what I value the most about working in the circus…the people behind the costumes and makeup. These pictures I take with the acts are either right before or after they go on stage. They remind me of the conversations I have with all of these amazing artists behind the scenes where I get to learn about their personalities, goals and individual stories of where they are from and how they got to where they are. These are the cherished times that create the bonds and memories that last forever and I’m so grateful that they take the time to allow me to capture a moment. This time around, I didn’t get a picture with my partner in crime @val_fbc but I loved working with you and I’m so proud to see how great you’re doing on tour. I’ve been on the road for the past month on some fun contracts. I’m going to try to get caught up and post some things from this year that have already taken place. I was very fortunate recently to get the opportunity to cover a few weeks on Cirque du Soleil’s big top show Algeria while they were in Alicante, Spain at the end of August. It’s such an iconic show which I had seen years back when it first launched in 2019 back in Montreal. Everyone was so welcoming and it was an honour to get to know and treat so many of the amazing artists. And the location of the big top right along the beach was epic 🏝️ ☀️. It felt like the 2 weeks flew by but I will never forget my time there. After a busy week 1, I decided to do some self care recovery and visited @mysanordicspa and loved it. Amazing facilities and highly recommended. Then week 2 started off with a shift in the polyclinic they create for the athletes to get regular treatment throughout the week.
