Last October, when the @tiltamax x @insdangraming F1 Rig we ordered couldn’t make it in time, we had to do a last minute improvisation for DP @nicholaschin_dop . The goal was simple, to have a tool small and compact that enables the shot and also have the ability to rig anywhere easily while supporting a fully decked out FX3 (With TX & Focus Motors).

We started off big, literally. @chaewoon27 and I stripped down a Movcam roll rig and sort of made it work, but there’s a few down sides to it.

- No 360 rotation
- Restricted rigging points
- High Tension on the bearing, causing a massive delay on the pan

That’s when I came across a go pro suction cup online, what caught my attention was the 360 endless rotation, multiple screw points WITH ARRI LOCKING PIN! I ordered it, stripped it down, and now it’s missing one part - the gear for me to mount a rotating motor. Special shoutout to @adrianloo for being able to 3D print a ring fast enough and accurate enough for the part!

And here it is, one of the first attempts to put everything together.

After multiple tries, the pan motor eventually came loose, fortunately, i have a @lightwidowcinema FIZLock which came in handy to support the motor.

In today’s situation, we could grab the tilta rig and start working right off, but this was a throw back to when Malaysia has no F1 rig delivered yet and we were in a rush to come up with a solution to deliver the rig and shot in New Zealand for the production of our local movie Terbang. With the limited time and resource, I guess we did pretty well?

A lil closeup of the mounted rig!

End result of how well the rig worked!

Bonus for having the rig, with a little bit of modification, it also serves as a roll rig for controlling the R2 with Force Pro! Seen above the production of Black Ops with DP @danny_lala7 ! by @chaewoon27

Some parts in life are difficult to sit with. Still, I’m grateful I chose to see things for what they were and even more fortunate to have found my human beans along the way. 🌼 taken in Bali, Indonesia by @chaewoon27

We’ve grown up. We no longer catch our breath at the sight of a rainbow or the scent of a rose as we once did. We have grow bigger and everything else smaller, less impressive. We get blase and worldly wise and sophisticated. - Brennan Manning. by @chaewoon27

As a film director, looking back at projects with perspective always fills me with gratitude that I have a job where I am free to imagine & create with friends. From an empty canvas of a location, together with the DP, Stylist, Colourists, Talents & so many more people, we create magic. And for that to crossover with keeping heritage alive? Truly, I am blessed.

All projects above directed by me 🥰
