It’s been a week of bad things happening. Is anyone else having day after day of things getting worse? This week i’ve had a crippled arm, disease, and car death (fixable but still).

Revisiting photos from Italy has helped. I went there in february with Libby and we saw so much and ate so much and rode trains so much. I shot 16 rolls of film there and through shooting that much film (and developed and scanning it all myself) I wore my self out on photography, leading me to my present hiatus with it. But i still think I made some great photos.

Quarterly instagram musical update post here. A busy july is coming! 5 shows this month:

7/7 and 7/9 with @phiabird , playing bass on sophia songs with @slowpacker at Static Age and in Black Mountain

7/10 playing a duo set with Laura Steenberge @imaginarymusic at @lamplightavl during the West Asheville Art Walk, we will be playing an acoustic guitar and upright bass set

7/12 with @shanejusticemccord at @superfl0wer residency at the other @lamplightavl building, playing some newer compositional music of shane’s

7/31 at @ayurpranalisteningroom , opening for the beautiful and wonderful @magictuberstringband , again playing with Shane doing recent compositions

and lots of practicing in between it all! i’ve had great fun writing songs collaboratively and sharing them with friends lately. a new band is forming, more on that soon :)

to all who follow me for photographs, i regret to inform you that i’m finding myself in a long photographic pause. i’ve barely used my cameras in the last few months. I’m still taking work, but my personal focus is on music lately.

i hope to become a vessel for beautiful music by @chajbo

BELL CANT GUARD ME EVEN WITH THE WRIST BRACE

This holy bell will be ready for holy ringing on the holy Lake Eden Basketball Court tomorrow at the @bmcmuseum ReHappening festival. I invite you to come ring this bell, which will be joined by a ~20 piece string and wind orchestra, and together we will resonate into the ether. by @chajbo

show post/life dump

got 4 shows coming up this and next month!

first i will be playing an improvised duo set this Sunday 3/22 with @phiabird this weekend at the tea tent in marshall. I’ll mostly be playing guitar paired with sophia’s wondrous voice and intuitive lyrical wanderings. i hope so get some of my own voice involved too. we’ll be playing with @jakobpek from california who plays mystical guitar and folk music.

then, i’ll be playing (upright bass) with @sally_inthe_garden opening for freaky guitar player @wendyeyes at AyurPrana next Friday 3/27. I saw Wendy at Hopscotch last year (maybe the year before?) and their playing absolutely blew my mind. i bought their record “viewfinder” and found continued mind expansion through their full band arrangements. Sally’s band also features @shanejusticemccord and @infinitikiss and channels old time fiddle and banjo into a more contemporary context, featuring tunes that subtly shift and evolve thru their duration.

again on upright, i’ll be playing full band style with @phiabird at AyurPrana on Saturday 4/4. I think it’s like a 13 piece ensemble with a 6 part choir section and a full band. Sophias dedication to music, songwriting, arrangement, and band leading will be on full display as we play that beautiful sounding room. other talented musicians joining that ensemble will be @goandfindoutpod @miiikejohnson @jackvictorsongs @lyledevitry and many others whom i can’t remember or don’t know at this moment.

another upright bass gig will be on April 17th, playing with @shamtunes opening for @natalie.jane.hill again at AyurPrana. Shane has spent the last year (maybe even longer?) working very hard on this next album of Sham music and i’ve been very grateful to play upright bass on the whole album. Most of the music centers around Shane, @mykeypowers and @psysundays and myself. I’m extremely proud and excited of this music and very glad to be performing it with Natalie who is a wondrous and inspiring guitar player and songwriter.

I just returned home from a month of traveling italy with my bestie @rodeo_walrus and touring the west coast with @whitneyband and i’ll share with you some of those magical moments! by @chajbo

This show is a part of our left-field concert series and art installation HOME: AS A VESSEL (led by fiber and print artist Sonia Norris @_needles_eye ) in the Community Space at REVOLVE. Also next door in the Project Space, HOME: AS A PHOTOGRAPH by George Schultz @georgeoncemore and Sophie Hull @salami_baby will be exhibiting.

This installation will also feature an evolving garden buildout from us and four altars. At the shows there will be a light install by Sophie and sound by Static Age Records. Show photography by Charlie Boss and Sophie.

photos taken on a kodak easy share cx7300, objectively the worst camera i have ever used.

resolution, optical clarity, customizability, ergonomics, durability, are all at the bottom of the bottom. Surprisingly, it has pretty cool color performance though.

it’s fun to make art at the other end of the spectrum from what i’m used to. leaning into the gritty, low res, easier and faster images. playing with digital edits. cropping in to a 3mp image.

the last digital point and shoot i had was a Sony Cybershot, and it completely transformed my approach and identity as a photographer for about a year. I used that camera until it ceased to function after about 6,000 shots, documenting parties, tours, friends, forests, everyday life.

Doing another CBO show next week. On December 10th, Wednesday evening, at AyurPrana.

Here’s a video from the last performance in August. We’ll be a 6/7 piece ensemble playing several improvisational compositions. Opening for the immensely talented duo of Will Franke and Arulu.
