To be published today, February 6, our first poetry book of the year is the first collection in French by the Palestinian poet Asmaa Azaizeh. It is translated by Chakib Ararou, who also wrote the book’s afterword:
"Do Not Believe Me If I Speak to You of War can also be read as the diary of a woman’s body besieged by wars, and how the brutality of occupation pushes it to revisit again and again each of the questions that trouble it to its deepest recesses. The question of love is closely examined, in a kind of clinical assessment in which male cowardice is sharply sketched. The question of procreation also haunts the collection, leaving unresolved the problem of whether or not to give life in a world of violence, and within a people that does not want to be annihilated."

Poet, performer, journalist, and Palestinian curator, Asmaa Azaizeh was born in 1985 in Dabburieh, in Lower Galilee. She directed the Mahmoud Darwish Museum in Ramallah, and her poetic work has been translated into several languages.

Chakib Ararou holds a PhD in modern Arabic literature, is a research associate at Iremam, teaches at Inalco, and is a literary translator. by @chamashish

J’ai pris cette photo du livre de @asmaa_azaizeh en juillet 2023, au moment de commencer à le traduire, sur la table du jardin de mon père au village. C’était un été de canicule et, même si ça ne fait pas encore trois ans, le monde n’est plus le même et il me semble que ces après-midis à l’ombre du figuier à chercher le rythme de sa cascade de métaphores remontent à une autre vie. Pourtant, le livre sort après-demain aux @editionsducommun et il me semble avoir été traduit hier. À ces sensations contradictoires se mêlent une grande fierté, et une grande joie.

التقطت هذه الصورة لكتاب أسماء عزايزة في يوليو 2023، في اللحظة التي بدأت فيها ترجمته، على طاولة حديقة بيت والدي في القرية. كان صيفا من القيظ، ومع أن ثلاث سنوات لم تكتمل بعد، لم يعد العالم كما كان ويبدو لي أن تلك الجلسات بعد الظهر، في ظل شجرة التين، وأنا أبحث عن إيقاع سيل استعاراتها، تعود إلى حياة أخرى. ومع ذلك، سيصدر الكتاب بعد غد عن دار لو كومان، ويخيل إلي أنه تُرجم بالأمس عندما أقرأ منه قصيدة. وتمتزج بهذه الأحاسيس المتناقضة فخر كبير، وفرح كبير. taken in أمسا by @chamashish
