The Darrell Gossett Heart and ‘Sole’ Award was established in early 2018 by CHAMP Camp’s Board of Directors in memory of Darrell Gossett, a long-time friend of more than 20 years and generous donor to CHAMP Camp. This award is presented to an individual, group or organization who fully embraces CHAMP Camp’s mission and vision, is reflective of the spirit of the late Darrell Gossett, and who has gone above and beyond in providing a service or donation to CHAMP Camp.

This year's recipient was Matt Derado. Matt is a long-time friend of CHAMP Camp. In addition to generously donating items to our live and silent auction, Matt serves as the DJ for the dance party at the end of the evening! Since Matt joined our event, we have seen the number of people staying to enjoy that time together increase. It is hard to get them to leave when it is time to go! Matt also traveled to Bradford Woods to provide music for our 35th birthday celebration on an extremely hot day! We are grateful for Matt and Jenna Derado and all they do to support our campers!

At the Silver Sneaker Benefit we had the pleasure of listening to an amazing young woman talk about her experience with CHAMP Camp. But she also provided wise words about how we should be living each day. We couldn't say it better than long-time counselor, Anny Busick (RN) "Her words can reach people in ways ours cannot—not only within the CHAMP Camp community, but also across healthcare communities."

Receiving an award in front of so many people can leave you at a loss for words! But this year's recipient, our lead nurse Ryanne Conrad, wanted a chance to share her thoughts about receiving this meaningful recognition:

I am incredibly honored and humbled to receive the Silver Sneaker Award this year.

Being part of CHAMP Camp is truly one of the greatest blessings of my life and my career as a nurse. I’ve had the privilege of being part of this organization for 11 years now, and somehow, every year, it just gets better.

It’s hard to put into words what a week at camp can mean. You come thinking you’re going to make a difference in these kids’ lives, but the truth is, they change yours just as much, if not more. A single week can leave an impact on your heart that lasts an entire lifetime.

The campers are truly incredible. At camp, we get to see them be their true selves — to laugh with them, make memories with them, and simply watch them be kids. Getting to know them and being trusted to be even a small part of their journey is something I will never take for granted.

CHAMP Camp has given me some of the most meaningful moments, friendships, and memories of my life, and I feel blessed to be part of something that has become such an important part of who I am.

So, thank you for allowing me to be part of something so incredibly special. I’m grateful for every camper, every memory, and every year I get to come back. I truly feel blessed to be part of the CHAMP Camp family.
