Inspired by friend and local legend #LennyMaughan, here's my contribution to #StravaArt as a TLM fan. If interested in doing something similar, here's hoping the following is useful.

Lenny warned me these always take longer than one would think, and boy was he right. We talked about how a larger area makes the jaggies less apparent, but that's more mileage. After overlaying clip art from disneyclips.com onto a map, the resulting tracing was too busy. Like Lenny has explained on TV, my route went through quite a few iterations. I cut a lot of wavy hair and fin detail. Ariel had to align her left arm with SoMA. 😉 Lenny advised me to get the eyes right, so I planned to run the eyes and mouth 2x, eyeballs at least 3x.

Then I drafted an approximating MapMyRun route and the mileage came out to about 50! 😮 Even a few more cuts only saved a few miles at that scale. Instead of scaling down the design to fit in what I could more safely run in a day, I resigned to run it over two days instead.

This weekend/week was far and away a mileage high, but I think I survived with the slower pace and all the stops. Pictured is me with Flounder 🐟 afterwards. This upload is from my Garmin for the cadence and heart rate data, but I have a screenshot of the Strava app which allowed me to make sure I was on track.

Lenny was also right the second guessing starts immediately. The arms and hands aren't great. During Sunday's mileage, I was thinking I could've done without some of those Saturday lines on the clamshell top. 🤦‍♂️ I did take Lenny's advice to round the intersections at key points, and they came out well for Ariel's mouth.

All in all, it was a great experience to try to have the more chill ultra marathon or trail running mentality instead of the usual marathon training. Pace was slow from the start. I walked many of the steep blocks. It was so nice to stop and eat normal food, sit for a few minutes, freshen up in restrooms -- all the things I would never do in a road race. I'd keep it to a single day's distance though. 🙃

🎤💃🏾 Whitney Elizabeth Houston (1963-2012) 👩‍🎤🎙

The recent biopic reminded me of the greatest singer of our lifetimes. Her voice was so powerful, yet so smooth and crisp too. Ten years later, her later years and passing still make me sad 😢, but we still have my favorites:

📀 1. How Will I Know: the 12" single on Houston St.; If you haven't heard it already, listen to the isolated vocal. It's stunning and stirring.

💿 2. Moment of Truth: Not to be confused with One Moment in Time, this was the B-side to I Wanna Dance and a criminally neglected track.

💽 3. I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me): This route is the less cropped image from the single that includes her hands and waist. In retrospect, the cropped second "Whitney" album cover would've been enough mileage.

On this three-day roundabout tour of SF, of course I had to include Whitney, Elizabeth, and Houston Streets. 😊

💿💃👒🎀 Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (2023) 🩷🐎💽

Happy belated one-year anniversary to TRAFOAMP (as the subreddit likes to call it). 🎉

"Make a bitch." 😇 "Knee-deep in the passenger seat and you're eating me out." 😊 "And I heard that there's a special place where boys and girls can all be queens every single day." 😭 These lines and the delivery are genius. I don't get all of it entirely, but I get it at some level, the rawness, the messiness, the bravado.

Chappell, I just hope you're doing okay. You deserve every bit of your meteoric rise, but I hope it doesn't feel like flying too close to the sun. 😢

Most of my album run art is my personal punk canon, some bands having been around for decades. This debut is so spectacular I'm not waiting that long, but I'm hoping we're celebrating the 10-year anniversary just as well.

💿 Weezer's Pinkerton (1996), 30th Anniversary 🎂

Happy 30th anniversary to _Pinkerton_, released on September 24, 1996.

"You are 18-year-old girl who live in small city of Japan"

If you said that to someone as prose, it's at best a little cringe. And yet, in song, it's the beginning of my favorite Weezer song "Across the Sea" on my favorite Weezer album.

The amazing tracks 5-8: "Across the Sea" / "The Good Life" / "El Scorcho" / "Pink Triangle" are my favorite four-song sequence on any album. (Track 9 "Falling for You" is great too, but my favorite five-song album sequence is the last 5 songs of Jeff Rosenstock's _Worry_, and Jeff gets bonus points for frequently playing it live.)

"Pink Triangle": "Everyone's a little queer / Can't she be a little straight?", "We were good as married in my mind / But married in my mind's no good"

Though it's not surprising, it's such a shame the album was received so badly in the moment. I often think of an alternate reality where if _Pinkerton_ was received better, maybe we'd still get more from Rivers Cuomo so raw and blunt. Instead, he turned to "Beverly Hills".

Other non-Pinkerton Weezer favorites: "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams", "Only in Dreams", "Jamie", "Paperface", and "In the Garage" (hence the photo location).

So possessed I was upon hearing this album played through live at the 2010 Memories tour that I crawled on stage at the Masonic to get this set list.

I've got your letter, you've got my song.

🎸 2026-09-02 2026-09-03 2026-09-04 2026-09-05 Asian Man Records 30th Anniversary 💿

Congrats and thanks to fellow middle-aged Asian punk Mike Park on 30 years of the record label and four days of celebration at Bottom of the Hill.

Headliner highlights:

1. I first saw Joyce Manor here in 2014. After having seen them a dozen times more, usually in larger venues, it was such a treat to see them again back here.

2. We were spoiled with two long Jeff Rosenstock shows earlier in the year at this same venue, but they managed to compress the energy of those two-hour sets into a shorter hour-plus set. I never thought I'd hear the Bomb song "The First Time I Met Samovan" again live.

3. I had also seen AJJ earlier in the year, but I felt the impact of the concluding songs "Linda Ronstadt" and "Big Bird" so much more when Sean is so close instead of across a trench.

Opener highlights:

1. Logan of Small Crush finished with a screamo version of "Chicken Noodle".

2. Get Married hit harder than I remember.

3. Dog Party finished with a furious last song "Box of Handkerchiefs".

At AMR15, I sadly only attended the bands I knew. At AMR20, I got more sucked in, went every day, and was forced into making hard, Fest-like choices between seeing bands at BotH or Thee Parkside. At this AMR30, I was relieved to just park myself up front every day, so here's one photo of every band over the four days from the foot of the stage:

Wed: Jeff Rosenstock, Bruce Lee Band, Teens in Trouble, Kitty Kat Fan Club

Thu: AJJ, MU330, Small Crush, Pacing

Fri: Joyce Manor, Slow Gherkin, Grumpster, Friendship Games

Sat: The Lawrence Arms, Honor System, Get Married, Dog Party

It was also an honor to stand next to photographer Hiro Tanaka and be his shock absorber. I can only hope Bottom or a similar venue can be found for the 35th anniversary or Mike's 60th birthday.

Joseph Bondoc (1985-2026)

We in Run365, WeRunSF, and the larger SF running community were stunned to hear of Joe's passing earlier this month. Joe was 41. We're at a loss for answers and may never get them. Here's just how I remember him:

After I started running in 2017, Joe was one of my first running friends. We ran together on Thursdays when we gathered at the defunct Lululemon on Grant Ave. He took this photo of Erin, Larry, Jeff, and me after my first marathon in 2018.

The cruelty of adult running is you can try to do something for years, and then someone new will come along and do it seemingly without even trying. Choose your parents wisely, I've said.

His running career highlight was, after many years, finally breaking 4 hours at the 2022 Philadelphia Marathon, his 10th I believe. I had cheered him at Rock and Roll San Jose for his Half PR just the month before and other races earlier in the year. I got weepy eyed re-reading his Strava recaps from these final Full and Half PRs where he mentions me. I hope I paid him back after his support of my early running days.

Adults really shouldn't have too many dreams for other adults, but he and I both wanted him to break 4:00 again closer to home. Here he is at the 2025 Oakland Marathon, his 12th and final. You know that feeling when you're tracking your friend in the app, then know they've fallen off their goal pace. You finally see them at Mile 25, know you have to put on a happy face, and egg him on to the finish.

Joe annoyed me at times. He fit the judgmental Filipino Catholic stereotype a little too well. (I say that as a Moreau High graduate.) I was selfishly worried that travelling together to Sacramento would throw off my CIM 2025, but it ended up being a great race and great road trip with Diana. Therein might be the most jarring takeaway I've had. You might not want someone in your hair, but you don't want them gone.

Like most mere mortals, his training had many fits and restarts over the years. I kept wanting him to try the marathon again. He was building up to run the Half at Santa Rosa this Sunday.

Father time comes for all of us, but I still can't believe you beat us all. Rest in peace, Joe. taken in Embarcadero Plaza by @chanarchy

Marathon #20, SF Marathon #8: 3:12:42.

🥇 1st in age group 👴: I'm usually Top 10-ish at SF. At smaller, local races, I'm 2nd A LOT, which is fine. I started running rather late in life, and it's not like I ran track or XC in high school. But for one fleeting moment, it's nice to be the top Middle-Aged Asian Male (MAAM). 👲

🎸 2026-06-09 + 2026-06-10 Jeff Rosenstock

🙏 Profuse thanks to Jeff, Mike, John, Dan, and Kevin for two magical nights last week. If indeed this great venue unfortunately closes at the end of the year, it will have been quite the send-off.

☯ @ryanmalabed and I figured when they didn't play any _Worry_ songs on the first night, we were going to get an album play-through on the second night. If I had to compare the nights, the absolute zenith was the Last 5 of _Worry_ on Night 2, but Night 1 had the favorites and energy more sustained throughout the night. The band did well to not repeat any songs playing 2+ hours each night.

🔥 Hot take: Whereas I generally prefer earlier band output over later solo material – see The Smiths vs. Morrissey – I actually like Jeff's solo work more than ASOB/Bomb. That could be just both of us maturing. 🤷‍♂️

👟 This was the second time I managed to tie Jeff's shoelace for him, this time during the final song, "We Begged to Explode" (last slide). The first time was at Slim's (also R.I.P.) a decade ago where Jeff first thought I was trying to play a prank on him by tying his feet together. We wouldn't let the voice of a generation trip and fall. 😇

Keith Haring's Radiant Baby 🌞👶

Happy Pride Month! 🏳‍🌈 Keith Haring's whimsical line art belied the seriousness of AIDS in the 1980s. Thus I've always found the baby, my favorite of his, subversive that way. This route visited three Haring sites in SF:

🎨 Mile 7: His Rainbow Honor Walk plaque is on the west side of Castro St. between 18th and 19th Streets.

🎨 Mile 20: The three dancing figures are in front of Moscone Center on the southwest corner of Howard and 3rd St. (We also swung by it the day before during WeRunSF, and my mom visited it almost 20 years ago!)

🎨 Mile 21: Grace Cathedral has "The Life of Christ", a triptych altarpiece inside.

Half marathon #10: 🌉 Bay Bridge "Half" 2026
Supposedly official: 1:27:25 (over ~12.9-13.0 miles)
🥈 2nd in age group 👴, 20th overall

Well, I must've been trying if I look this grimaced. Here I am in my Oakland A's color scheme at least. 🟢🟡

I was lucky enough to get a last-minute YOLO bib from volunteering. The bridge wasn't as crowded as I thought it might be, and it was nice to spot friends coming in the other direction. 👋

🧃my Go Go Juice: I knew the aid stations were spaced out a little farther because they would only be on the ends of the bridge span, so I carried a larger flexible flask and sipped on that during the climb and descent.

I love how Sabrina Carpenter makes fun of her height in concert. I had her 1.5-hour Coachella set on my open-ear headphones, so my audio cue was to throw down once I heard the late set songs "Juno" and "Espresso". After dissatisfying races at Chinatown YMCA and Oakland in March (and Burrito League in January), it was nice to hold up in the late stages of a race again. 🙏

As @bezyonce cleverly noted, the course was Short n' Sweet. 😉 I knew the short course was a possibility from friends in prior years. I hope finish line volunteers weren't too confused by many a runner blowing past the medals just to neurotically get 13.11 miles on their devices. Even if it were roughly an 1:28 effort, that would've been a nominal PR over 1:29s at Oakland and Berkeley in 2023. I was also happy that friend Jordan and I broke 3 hours combined. 🥳
