My birthday is at the end of the month, so I asked a few of my nearest + dearest: intuitively, if you could put any song on a birthday mix for me, what would it be?

Chanelle Allesandre / Jean-Michel Kampara -“Maritime skin, meren elävä nahka” cs/digital

Maritime skin, meren elävä nahka is a split album by two artists brought together by the Baltic sea. Both sides deftly elaborate on field recordings taken underwater with the same hydrophone in Ruissalo, Finland. From the same body of water and the same tool, two different experimental interpretations bifurcate, and a conversation develops. A fluid exchange reverberates not only between the two sides, but also within the tracks and their multifarious layers: the last sounds of a harp that Allesandre built in situ at Lump gallery—recorded moments before its disassembly, Kampara’s 12-string guitar, Allesandre’s grandmother’s harmonium, poems read aloud, the deliverance of a divinatory message, steps, legs, keyboards, fingers. What may be a distant storm could also be a face momentarily disfigured by the wind. In Maritime skin, meren elävä nahka, the past permeates the present as a soaked garment dries under the sun. Sound behaves like liquid memory, while listening and remembering meet in the act of floating. Our bodies and senses are half-submerged, pulled back and forth between water and air. Each track offers a new way to be received by water. Underneath all these permutations, the latent impulse is to let go and drift, to make space for the hidden sounds to come out and find us.

Ryan Martin plays casio on “Message in a Bottle.” Lotta Petronella’s voice can be heard divining on “Land legs.” Georges Bataille quotation is from a poem in his essays on “The Divinity of Laughter.” Chanelle Allesandre plays the harp she designed and constructed onsite at Lump Projects on “pouring waters” and “spirit medium;” she plays Nana’s harmonium on “Floating (nomenclature).” All water sounds were recorded in and around the Baltic sea in Ruissalo, Finland during July 2024

The • in / essence • compilation is officially available to listen to in full,

and,

its accompanying digital booklet is also available to peruse at your leisure.

You can, of course, download individual tracks but this is something best experienced in its totality—as it is a body, a world, unto itself.

The booklet features imagery and the poems which were inspired by working with the essence of The Accidental Meadow which I sent to all the contributors. A special thank you to @joebastardo for working alongside me on this final element of the project.

And an endless thank you to @enmossed @emmanuel.vincent.presents + to @softer_recordings + to all those who contributed to this ~

The past two months @lump_raleigh have been a waking dream.

.

Thank you to everyone who attended, listened, performed, walked about the space, immersed into the installations, brought flowers.

And a special thank you to @connercalhoun @fossilizedwilderness @shlonik_ @lotta_petronella @sea_song_root and to my mother ~ ~ this exhibition would not have been possible without the help and generosity and guidance from each of you.
