When people ask what I do, I’ve found it increasingly difficult to answer with a label like artist or researcher. Instead, I find it more useful to describe the question guiding my practice.⁣
⁣
𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦?⁣
⁣
For a long time, I thought of making in the studio, research, talks and curatorial projects as related but distinct activities. Increasingly, I’ve realised they’re all different vessels for exploring the same enquiry.⁣
⁣
Essentially, my practice investigates what symbolic images, objects, stories and materials can reveal about human experience, including the relationship between psyche, matter and the living world.⁣
⁣
The contexts change, but the question remains the same.⁣

There is wonderful alchemical phrase “starry milk” that appears in Thomas Vaughan’s Euphrates, 1655, written under the name Eugenius Philalethes. Vaughan imagines water as a bird that rises into the air, gathers a life-giving milky moisture, and returns with it. He links this to the “milk of birds,” found in water’s “crystal breasts.”⁣
⁣
Second image: One afternoon in the studio, the light moved through this cast glass piece and I turned round to find it glowing. It seemed to have become a source of light itself.⁣

I’ve been in Oslo this week sharing my research and practice at the symposium at @kunstnerneshus, curated by @martejohnslien.⁣
⁣
My talk, “Vegetative Alchemy: The Artist as Living Vessel”, introduced vegetal alchemy as a way of thinking, making, and moving through the world. ⁣
⁣
Drawing on medieval alchemical manuscripts, Egyptian funerary texts, Hildegard of Bingen’s viriditas, and examples from my own work, I presented alchemy as a living symbolic system grounded in embodied and plant-like processes of transformation.⁣
⁣
These images offer a glimpse of the material that shaped the talk.⁣
It was a privilege to contribute to such a thoughtful programme amongst brilliant scholars, artists, and curators. It was a real vessel of exchange!⁣
⁣
Thank you to Marte for the invitation and generous hosting and to the many other wonderful people I met on this trip!⁣

Absolutely delighted to share that my work exploring alchemy and the symbolic imagination is included in MAGIC: Beyond the Supernatural in Contemporary Art, a new book by the brilliant Dr Amy Hale, published by Tate this October.⁣
⁣
Bringing together 45 international contemporary artists, the book explores the enduring presence of magic, alchemy and occult practices in contemporary art, and the many ways these offer alternative ways of understanding and engaging with the world.⁣
⁣
It’s a real pleasure to be included in such extraordinary company, and huge congratulations to Amy, whose research and writing continue to open up important conversations around art, magic and esoteric knowledge. I can’t wait to see the finished book!⁣

⁣
A few photographs from Friday night’s private view, and a first glimpse of some of the work in the exhibition including the Cy Twombly collages I am in love with. ⁣
⁣
So pleased to be part of this show, and with how my work has been beautifully installed 🙏🏻. There was too much to take in properly on the opening night, so I’m looking forward to going back and spending more time with the exhibition.⁣
⁣
Huge thanks to curator Lara @laragoodband and the RAMM team for working their mushroom magic. And an extra treat to be share the evening with my friend @holly__stevenson who is also in the exhibition 👠🍄‍🟫⁣

LIVING LABYRINTHS: ART AND FUNGI⁣
RAMM @rammuseum, Exeter⁣
3 October 2026 – 21 February 2027⁣
⁣
Very pleased to be part of 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘓𝘢𝘣𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴: 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘪, opening at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery in Exeter in two weeks.⁣
⁣
Bringing together contemporary art, RAMM’s natural history collections and significant loans by Beatrix Potter and Cy Twombly, Living Labyrinths explores the cultural world of fungi through a lens of scientific enquiry. The exhibition considers themes of symbiosis and biodiversity, and the ways fungi shape both our physical and conceptual worlds.⁣
⁣
I’ll be showing a number of glass/ ceramic works alongside work by Gemma Anderson-Tempini, Sian Bonnell, Seana Gavin, Andy Harper, Hilde Hauan Johnsen, Lucy Mercer, Jo Pearl, Beatrix Potter, Jason Singh, Holly Stevenson and Cy Twombly.⁣
