🌊 A personal message from Colette Brooks, Daughter of Alan Brooks at Chapter 🌊

Dear friends, it’s been a long-held dream of mine to celebrate the incredible legacy of Chapter surfboards and shop, a brand that has meant so much to my family & the North Devon surf community. Many of you knew my father, Alan Brooks, who played a pivotal role in Chapter’s history and sadly passed away in 2022. As we approach Chapter’s 50th anniversary next year, I’m eager to honour his contributions, as well as everyone involved in this amazing journey, and keep the spirit of Chapter alive. 💙

I’ve loved connecting with Mervyn Beard and Rebecca over the past year, sharing memories and stories that span decades. Mervyn shaped the first Chapter surfboard in 1975, founding the company with John ‘Flipper’ Stacey. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with Jennie Lewis @sunsidestudio (the daughter of Clive Lewis, who worked with my father at Windjammer) to refresh the original logos and branding that have always been a key part of Chapter’s identity. 🎨
Next year is HUGE - 50 years of Chapter Surfboards, a truly independent, family-owned surf brand. We’re kicking things off with the 19th Chapter Longboard Classic at Saunton (when autumn swell finally arrives), and we can’t wait for you to be part of this exciting chapter. 🏄‍♀️

I’d love for you to join us in celebrating this legacy, sharing memories, and supporting the incredible surf culture here in North Devon. As we honour 50 years of the first Chapter surfboard, we proudly carry forward the pioneering spirit of the founders & continue to build on this rich heritage. 🙌🏼
From my days as a young girl working in the shop and learning to surf locally, to now working as a family at @thebeachcafedownend in Croyde serving our amazing surf community - you’ll always find us close to the waves. 🌊 💫 please stop by and say hello!

We’re excited to continue connecting the history of North Devon surfing with new innovations & adventures happening on our beautiful beaches. Stay tuned for all the upcoming celebrations, and follow us for more updates!

Here’s to a new Chapter,

Huge thanks to everyone who came down — the surfing was epic, and the energy even better 💥 It was also a special moment to remember and celebrate some true local legends who will always be in our hearts. In 1980 Mervyn Beard created the UK’s first ever surf team called “Team Chapter” saying “It was a clandestine operation. We got everyone branded and turned up in the van at the contest in Croyde. No one had ever seen anything like it before”.

Team Chapter became well recognised as a pioneering group of modern surfers, with the likes of radical Croyde surfer Richard Carter testing out new board innovations and then becoming British Surfing Champion in 1984.

How many faces do you recognise? Answers below...

Love this pic of Al in the factory way back in the day.

Alan Brooks started surfing in 1966 and previously worked at Tiki and shaped boards for Windjammer surfboards before becoming a partner in the legendary Chapter Surf Shop in Braunton, North Devon.

Alan witnessed the growth in surfing in the area and reminisced saying “people in England didn’t even know you could surf here. There were a few people surfing, occasionally you would go out as the only one”.

Sadly Alan passed away in 2022 and is much missed by his family in Braunton and the North Devon surfing community. taken in Downend at Croyde by @chapter_surf_shop

Chapter pushed the progression of surfing, with radical twin pins, knee boards, longboard and thruster shapes.

The innovative approach revolutionised board production in the area allowing for the creation of high-quality moulded boards at an affordable price.

This breakthrough propelled Chapter Surfboards into the limelight, churning out up to 25 boards a week well into the 1980s. taken in Downend at Croyde by @chapter_surf_shop
