Backed by the dunes of Braunton Burrows, Saunton Sands stretches out four miles from Crow Point towards the striking geomorphology of Croyde Bay. There are big skies, wide spaces and relaxed rides. And it has long been an epicentre of British longboarding, a San Onofre for the South West…

Ryan writes, “…Ellie Miller has been a pioneer female shaper through @millersurfboards.uk : ‘My earliest memories of surfing here were as a beginner in my late twenties watching loggers like Chris Preston and Ben Haworth zipping past with such style, and me thinking, ‘wow they are so cool.’ Me and my wife had a DVD called ‘Devon Lanes and Longboards’ featuring the local surfers, which really inspired me to pursue longboarding. We eventually moved down into a little rented flat in one of the farm hamlets in Saunton, and in time we became part of the local crew that hogged the corner next to rocks. I started building boards in the carport of that flat in 2012…’”

Ryan adds, “Another cornerstone of the longboard scene is Jools Matthews of @gulfstreamsurfboards , long acclaimed as one the finest shapers in Europe. ‘I’m now the last remaining full-time professional board builder in North Devon,’ said Jools. ‘Given that North Devon is the second most popular surfing area in the UK after Newquay, how did that happen?…Fast forward over thirty years, after goodness knows how many recessions and the advent of mass produced imported boards, and I realise the most radical thing I’ve actually done is survive. So today I find myself making beautiful surfboards, walking distance from Saunton. I rarely miss a good swell, and I have a six-months waiting list for my custom boards. I’m proudly carrying the flag for the long list of fine surfboard manufacturers who have long since come and gone from North Devon…’”
