Shopping my shelves this month, and staying away from the shiny new releases in favour of some books I’ve had for a while.

📚Buckeye by Patrick Ryan
📚The Appeal by Janice Hallett
📚The Secret History by Donna Tartt
📚Shark Heart by Emily Habeck

I had a cosy afternoon in my reading room yesterday, which I barely used over the summer. And as much as I love reading in the sun, nothing beats a book, a blanket and a big cup of tea!

Two books about art that you should read 🎨

The Artist - Lucy Steeds
This was a five star read for me and my book of the summer so far. Set in the sultry heat of the Provence summer, the novel follows journalist, Joseph as he is invited to stay with the talented yet reclusive artist, Edouard Tartuffe. Relationships grow, mysteries unravel and Joseph’s world is changed forever.

I consider myself to know a reasonable amount about artists but the detailed way Lucy Steeds described Tartuffe’s life and work had me Googling to confirm that he definitely wasn’t a real artist!

Stunning writing, great plot, memorable characters.

Still Life by Sarah Winman

This had been sat on my TBR for so long and I’m so glad I finally read it. It’s the kind of book where nothing much happens, but everything happens. I’d struggle to give you a plot line but what this book does give you is a sweeping exploration of life, love, making your own family, being true to yourself and finding the beauty in the world around you. I fell in love with the cast of characters that the novel follows across the decades and was touched by the love that they found in their friendships.

The style of this book won’t be for everyone but it was for me, and it has put Florence firmly on my travel wishlist. by @chaptersbythecoast

Netflix crime drama but make it literary.

Kala is a dual timeline, multi-perspective novel from Colin Walsh that follows a group of friends reunited in their hometown fifteen years after one of their group, the bold but vulnerable Kala, disappeared without a trace. When human remains are discovered on a building site in town, the friends realise it is time they must confront the past.

Walsh’s prose perfectly captures the darker undercurrents and atmosphere that can run beneath the surface in seemingly charming tourist towns. The beginning of the book is a slow-burn but with plenty of hints and hooks dropped as the tension builds. Towards the end of the book, the pace ramps up significantly. The crime storyline is slightly convoluted, but the real strength of this book is its depiction of the intensity of adolescent friendship and those long, hazy summers of teenage years.

The pacing and structure reminded me of The God of the Woods so if you enjoy crime novels with a literary twist, add Kala to your list. by @chaptersbythecoast
