Sunday Shelfie 📚

Good morning and happy Sunday y’all! I stayed up last night to finish Good Spirits by B.K. Borison and will be continuing my journey through The Strength of the Few by James Islington. I also began listening to my arc audio of Husband of the Year by M.A. Wardell and am enjoying it so far.

I feel like we are in this weird time in November where it’s difficult to keep track of what day it is because Thanksgiving is around the corner. Something I’ve noticed about November in terms of reading is I am noticing myself taking a step back from feeling like I need to pick my book up everyday. There would be some days where I would feel dumb for not picking up my book, but remind myself there are just some days where I am going to prefer to do other things than sit down and read. Anyone else feel this sometimes?

Sunday Shelfie 📚

❓: What are you currently reading?

Happy Sunday y’all! Not so happy to be at the end of the weekend as I’ve really enjoyed prioritizing doing things that I love this weekend, like reading, playing video games, etc; My work week was rough to say the least so being able to focus on myself and my needs this weekend was so helpful.

Speaking of helpful, I very much appreciate each and every one of you that takes time to comment, share, like, and repost. In the moments of frustration, confusion, disappointment, and a multitude of other feelings that arose this past week, having an outlet like this and engaging with others really filled my cup and kept me sane when I thought I was losing my marbles a bit.

I am unsure how much reading will get done today, as I’ll be cleaning my house, watching the MSU vs U of M basketball game, and playing Pokopia later. But will absolutely be sneaking a few chapters in at the minimum.

S U N D A Y S H E L F I E

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope everyone has a nice and relaxing day today. I’m about to go have lunch with family, do some cleaning, and then finish Eldest by Christopher Paolini.

I can’t believe this is the first shelfie I’ve done of the year! It’s crazy that time flew by and it’s March as well. I’m still figuring out the bottom shelves but currently I’m happy with where everything is situated. I did get another shelf for the corner so I could separate my romance, literature fiction, and young adult contemporary titles as I was feeling like those books needed their own spot away from all the fantasy.

I hope everyone has a great week!

REVIEW: On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous 🌊

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5

As my introduction to Ocean Vuong, the author cements themself as a force to be reckoned with in the literary fiction world. To give some context, this was a book I picked up on a whim at the bookstore, and am so glad I did as I was not ready for the emotional impact that would take place.

The book is a semi-autobiographical novel written as a letter from a young Vietnamese American man named Little Dog to his mother, who cannot read. Through memories of his family’s experiences with war, immigration, poverty, and trauma, Little Dog explores his complicated relationship with his motherand grandmother, his identity, and his coming-of-age as a queer man. When he falls in love with a boy named Trevor, heconfronts the beauty and pain of love, loss, and vulnerability. Ultimately, the novel examines how generational traumashapes families while exploring the power of language, memory, and storytelling to understand the past and findconnection in a world marked by suffering.

This book ultimately will be remembered as one of the most lyrically and beautifully written stories on my shelf. To think about the pain that is within the pages and the way they were given narrative is a skill so unique, and for this to be a debut novel demonstrates the power the author contains within their writing.

Another Sunday, Another Shelfie 📚

❓: What is a book that screams fall to you?

Another week has come and gone, and here we are waking up on Sunday again. This week was pretty good and have been really happy with my reading. I’m currently halfway through my re-read of Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare, and I am hoping to finish it today through the mixture of reading the physical book, swapping that out with my kindle, and also listening to the audiobook.

I’ve got a big week coming up for work with 15 clients in two days and then three days of all day training. Not sure how much energy I’ll have to read, but I’m going to challenge myself to read every morning and every night, even if it’s a chapter. I’m hoping to make some way through Queen of Air and Darkness so next week I can finally dive into The Last King of Faerie!!

Have a great week everyone!

REVIEW: Victorious 🔻
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much to @torbooks for the ARC and finished copy in exchange for an honest review.

V.E. Schwab seeks victory in her triumphant return and grand finale in the Villians trilogy with Victorious. As this is the third and final book in this series, I can’t give too much away due to spoilers, so instead, let me tell you why this book specifically remains both vicious and vengeful, as well as victorious.

VE Schwab has such a talent in which all of the series she writes, each one feels distinct in the way it’s pacing is written, the voice and narrative style guiding the themes while gaining momentum towards the climax, and the sheer technique in creating such a vivid and well-detailed environment where it comes to life in my head so effortlessly. The pacing in this one reminds me of Vicious, where it was quick and action packed, yet contained elements of Vengeful where at parts it slowed down just enough for you to prepare yourself for the downslope to the end, allowing the impact of certain scenes and events to be remarkable yet brutal.

The biggest trait of this book that swept me away was the theme of therapy that has to do with the antagonist of this story. VE Schwab takes a mundane experience and completely flips it on its head, challenging what we know about what we view as innocent and depicts real world dangers of such practices (in a relative sense). As a therapist, I was absolutely enthralled why this purely imaginative idea that this theme presents alongside supernatural and extraordinary abilities. VE continues to be a trail blazer in which she creates captivatingly unique and original ideas and sets the world ablaze with the curtain call of our favorite characters Victor, Eli, Sydney, Mitch, and many more. Sure enough, this book catapults its way to be a contender for my top read of the year. VE Schwab, take a bow, and get ready to soak in the love you are about to receive when readers get their hands on this one. It has been a pleasure to be a reader of @veschwab since The Archived and The Unbound and recognize the beauty of her work over time. taken in BOOKSTA by @chapterswithkyle

But First, How About A Fall Shelfie 📸🍁

Happy Sunday y’all! It is a crisp fall Sunday morning here in Michigan, and I’m soaking every second of it up. Fall is my favorite time of year, and I’ve been seeing how others are decorating their shelves for the season, and so I’ve decided to put something together for the occasion as well.

Cleaning, laundry, and reading are all that’s on the agenda today. I’m hoping to make a dent in Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare today as I’ve been going back and forth between the audio and the physical book. I’m hoping to have it wrapped up in the next couple days so I can move on to Lord of Shadows and stay on target for my reread ahead of the Last King of Faerie.

I hope everyone has a fantastic day!

Re-Reading Books: Tedious or Enlightening?

❓: Do you enjoy re-reading books or do you find it to be too much or not worth your time?

Re-reading has become a central focus of my reading at this current time. With the journeys of going back and experiencing The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices, it has taught me that when I love characters so badly in another series placed in that universe, that I struggle to adapt to the new setting and characters introduced. I don’t know if anyone else struggles with this, but it makes re-reading books so much more fun for me as a reader.

I can’t wait to see how things look different when I re-read The Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb to test out this theory.
