Substack

//四年前,我初次到訪藝鵠所在的灣仔富德樓,參與蘇偉貞的朗讀會。作家說道,「我們腳下的軒尼詩道好像城市裏的一條河流」,於是我將富德樓想成島嶼,又想,無論是藝鵠,還是其他因高昂租金而懸擱在半空的獨立書店,其實都是一座座小島——混凝土是市中心隆起的層積岩,高度成就島嶼,與現世就有了海的間隔。小島生活,人味濃厚,島民們有能力辨認彼此。如果我們可以力拒網路書店的誘人折扣,還特地花時間跑去光顧我們喜愛的獨立書店,那多數是因為,我們對於自己的島、自己的部落有歸屬感,並珍視在書店這個空間可能發生的聚合。

// by @charcharwrites

About the “Flow and Friction: Media Practices Across Global Asias” graduate symposium at UC Santa Cruz on May 15, Friday.

Because of instagram’s stupid ass word limit for its posts I’m sharing the text as screenshots so you have to swipe right to see. 💀 (Am I the only one to think that Instagram is extremely unfriendly to writers!????)

by @charcharwrites

A small piece of writing that spontaneously sprang from a random convo about teeth-brushing (full version on my substack @charcharwrites):

//The preparation for the Olympics in non-western countries was often packaged with mass urban clean-up campaigns and a removal of unsightly elements from the vicinity of venues, sometimes implemented with a degree of violence. During the Tokyo Olympics of 1964, Hi Red Center — a radical art collective from Japan, founded by artists Genpei Akasegawa, Natsuyuki Nakanishi and Jiro Takamatsu — staged a “Cleaning Event” in the middle of Tokyo. The artists and their collaborators wore white lab coats and face masks, put up a sign that says “Cleaning in Progress”, and meticulously scrubbed the street surfaces in Ginza. The act ostensibly followed the Japanese government’s call for cleaning up and beautifying the city in order to prepare it for the gaze of the international community, especially after the country’s devastating defeat in WW2 less than two decades ago, but the artists deliberately did it overzealously and obsessively to the point of absurdifying the act of cleaning.

In East Asia, official campaigns for cleanliness are so deeply intertwined with the anxiety to “become modern” and “become civilized” in the eyes of the international community — which is always fantasized as the west. This anxiety of not being clean/modern/civilized enough is so ingrained in us: many cultures practice hygiene so religiously that they end up outdoing white people, as in Korean teeth-brushing. It is also interesting how within the ethnic politics in East Asia, the group at the top of the ethnic hierarchy and perceived to be closest to whites (i.e. the Japanese) are also perceived to be the cleanest. If racial prejudice — whether it’s white-against-Asians or internal racism among Asians — is often practiced in the register of smell (e.g. Asians/Koreans/Indians taunted for smelling like soy sauce/kimchi/curry etc, the list is endless), then the relentless effort to purge ourselves of dirt and foul smell and become an ideal, hygienic, visually and olfactorily neutral being perhaps stems from the anxiety to lie below the radar of racism. // by @charcharwrites

Otobong Nkanga, “Cadence”, 2024
Woven tapestry of acryl, cotton, monofilament, padana, recycled plastic, techno, trevira, and viscose

This is a work that has stuck with me since February. For me it speaks to the porousness of everything in the cosmos, including human beings, and the ways in which we are interconnected, co-constitutive, and living through reverberations at every moment.

Nkanga also made the soap work (“Carved to Flow”) at documenta 14.
