Who decides which memories a site preserves?

The answer is never innocent. ‘In the Space of Trauma’, the last episode of ‘Cross-Cuts’, our video essay series, weaves M+ works into a story about what remains when a place is remade. A father and daughter return to an old neighbourhood. A woman sells a vision of home built over a demolished community. A parable of fathers and sons is offered in a language its listener may not share.

誰能決定一個地方該保存何種記憶？

這個答案向來絕不簡單。「影疊意匯」錄像文章系列的最終集《幽靈空間：記憶與創傷，將M+館藏串連於一段虛構故事，探討一個地方經歷重塑後，究竟留下了甚麼。一對父女重遊昔日社區；一名婦人推銷在清拆社區上興建的家園願景；一段關於父子的寓言，以聽者未必能理解的語言娓娓道來。

💌 2025 was a year I tried to spend less online: more forest walks, more daily drawings, more nourishing meals with friends. More reading in bed with the gentle sunrise: ten pages every morning has been one of my favorite rituals for two years now. It’s a protective spell to still the mind, sharpen focus — to remember anew how to turn inward toward mystery and poetry, to catch the moments in the corner of your eye, when the universe winks at you.

This fall I finally locked in to focus on finishing my dissertation by late 2026. (I guess this also counts as a “new year promises to myself” post.) Even in more relaxed times I usually don’t remember to post updates on my main until months later, so here’s a sampler platter of some sweet moments from the year of the snake.

Big hugs to all the friends old and new who have made this year beautiful — even amidst worsening authoritarianism here in the US — and communities that keep growing and strengthening, holding fast with love. Happy holidays ❤️

💌 Some fragments from a dreamy August in Shanghai, Fuzhou, Taipei, Hong Kong, Gwangju and Seoul — during which I never seemed to stop moving, but was lucky enough to sit down for many sumptuous meals and evening strolls with lovely friends and fam

Additional highlights included visiting my family’s ancestral shrine, immersing in some gorgeous art that felt like poetry, and climbing a little ladder hidden above a sink to soak in my favorite garden in the whole world 𓅰 𓅬 𓅭 𓅮 𓅯

✨Loved reuniting with two London grad school friends (now based in California) over the opening of the animated futurist fantasy 'Warring States Cyberpunk' (which @charcharwrites contributed research/writing for) at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Kongkee's (@fatboykongkee) epic narrative traces the legendary Chinese poet Qu Yuan’s soul on a journey from the ancient Chu Kingdom to an imagined 21st century Asia of cyborgs, popstars, electro rock, and surprising romantic reunions.

The exhibition - brilliantly curated by Abby Chen (@abby.c.chen) and team in record time when an unexpected opportunity arose in the museum's scheduling - is boundary-breaking: including the way in which content and curation carry viewers "back to the future", meaningfully integrating carefully-selected bronze and jade works from the museum's remarkable historic collection - psychedelically-lit - into a world of immersive projections, optical illusions, and sound installations. During his exhibition tour, the artist spoke about what it meant to him to show an original wooden Chinese Tomb Figure from the Warring States period (475-221 BCE) alongside working drawings and storyboards themselves inspired by pre-Qin art, bridging a two thousand year gap.

【監控時代求生術｜查映嵐】

根據一份2014年的報告，人們每天上載十八億幅照片到互聯網上，一年下來就是6570億幅照片，而這還只是上載量，人們每天拍攝、儲存的照片至少以十數倍計。在互聯網與智能電話普及前的時代，影像的製造與傳播有技術與資源上的門檻，什麼圖像可以出現在報章雜誌、廣告看板、電視螢幕、電影院、美術館，決定權掌握在少數精英手中；而在數位化與網絡化的當下，儲存與展示的空間幾乎變得無窮盡，人人都在不停製造圖像，人人都擁有一個私人的圖像庫，人人都可以策展自己的虛擬空間，然而大部份人都只在不加思索地重複這些動作。

今天我們面對全方位的綿密監控，任何異動都會前所未有地快速被控管、懲治，可以做的似乎不多，但是至少仍可借鏡前述的藝術家，將政權與企業想要監控的變成隱形，將他們極力隱藏的公諸於世、快速傳播，利用手機、電腦或其他既有的工具，創造性地製作、重新審視、重組、策展、傳播圖像，以反轉可視與不可視的秩序——這些行為獨立看起來都很微小，但如果每一個人都盡力的話，再微小的行動也可能開闢新意義。
