House and Leisure Editor-in-Chief, @charl_edwards, had a front row view of @gucci’s recent Milan Fashion Week collection, titled ‘The Store Show’. Staged in a fictitious department store where past meets present, it previews Gucci Creative Director @demna’s vision for the brand and the Gucci store of the future. ‘What struck me most was the broad appeal of the pieces (or “merch”). Gucci already belongs to the people, and Demna recognised this in his show and his vision for what’s to come – taking Gucci back to its roots, while also crafting a future that celebrates its core customer base. All types were embraced in this show, as there was something for everyone. It’s still a little snobbish, but at the same time quite inclusive – a bizarrely wonderful contradiction’, says Charl. Says Demna of his show and vision: ‘The Store Show is the first collection in which I present my complete personal vision for the brand, based on everything I’ve learned about it since I arrived,’ says Demna. ‘Gucci stands for being rooted in the desire to belong to a more glamorous world, and in the audacity to remake that world in your own image. Gucci moves easily between aristocracy and pop culture, Florence and Hollywood, good taste and bad taste, heritage and mass desire, belonging and rebellion, and the interplay between the two. It absorbs the present and evolves, but without losing any of its recognizable codes. Gucci is a space of possibility, a place where anyone can become whoever they choose to be.’ To see Demna’s vision coming to life, keep an eye out for the next edition of House and Leisure (Volume 23 – Unfurl), as we unveil Gucci’s new store in Cape Town.
