What happened on the Tennessee Senate floor yesterday was the most brazen attack on Black voting rights this nation has seen since Jim Crow.

I stood in protest atop my desk singing the Black National Anthem and called it exactly what it is: Jim Crow 2.0.

I stood for my ancestors. For Memphis. For my constituents. For my children.

Speaker McNally cut off my mic while speaking. My sign was snatched out of my hand. They turned off my electronic voting buttons and refused to let me cast a vote for my constituents.

He called my protest ‘disgraceful,’ ‘unprecedented,’ and ‘unbecoming of a Senator.’ He doesn’t get to be the moral authority on what actions get defined as respectable. Not this week. Not after this vote.

Calling an illegal special session to redraw racist maps between censuses is unprecedented.

Rigging congressional maps to erase Black representation is disgraceful.

Leaving a legacy as Lt. Governor of casting your final vote to usher in Jim Crow 2.0 is unbecoming of a Senator.

Tennessee Republicans broke the law, to change the law — to continue allowing Donald Trump to be above the law. And I refuse to give legitimacy to illegitimate proceedings.

What became the toughest week of my legislative career, I went from despair to rage to resolve to pride— sometimes in the same hour. But I'm reminded of the poem, Invictus: "My head is bloody, but unbowed."

They may rig the map, but they cannot remove our power.

I’m extremely grateful for the show of love, support, prayers, and solidarity by my Democratic colleagues and staff, my Senate District 19 constituents, my comrades, and my family.

Thank you to every Tennessean who showed up to dissent; to every activist, organizer, clergy, and community leader who joined the fight; and to every influencer, journalist and ally who amplified the significance of this historical moment.

Now more than ever, Tennessee is the new battleground, and we must focus on the fight in state legislatures.

Tennessee is not a red state. We're a gerrymandered state. And yesterday, they proved me right.

It’s time to match energy!

Brent “Lap Dance” Taylor stood on the Tennessee Senate floor talking about ugly strippers, and all I could think was: how he know?? 👀

This is the man telling Memphis that Justin Pearson is “chaos.” Chile, the pot calling the kettle black! 🙄

And these are the same Republicans who called my desk protest “immature” and “undignified.” The same white men who expelled Justin for standing with children demanding action on gun violence. When a Black man protests for kids, it’s “chaos.” When a Black woman protests rigged maps, it’s “undignified.” When a white man brings nasty strip-club talk to the Senate floor, they give him a promotion.

No wonder Donald Trump endorsed him! Same energy as “grab ’em by the p*ssy.”🤔

He won’t make Memphis matter. He’ll make Memphis embarrassed.

Time to send a real leader like @justinjpearson to Congress. Early voting starts Wednesday! 🗳️

Everybody in Tennessee with a conscience, a brain, and a little bit of moral backing, we are ALL @senatorcharlaneoliver

We are so lucky to have her. I don’t know what we would do without her. I feel like whenever I see her, I comment on her expressions that I see online because they’re so on point and I feel like she more than she feels the same thing that I do.

The redistricting that happened in Memphis, is racist, unnecessary, and stupid. And look, I like being able to vote for @justinjpearson because I think he’s a great human and I think he’s great for Tennessee. But I’m in Nashville and he’s in Memphis. I just drove there and it took me 3:15 minutes. Me being able to vote for him shows you how stupid that district is set up. And I believe they set up that district obviously to strip Black folks of their voting power, but they did to district 9, kinda like they did it in district 5, so that Andy Ogles would win (he was just primaried🤣) and look what a 💩 racist, homophobic liar of a Rep he turned out to be. Where is that $25,000 @repandyogles ??

Gerrymandering is awful. But we just have to make sure that we get out and vote. Early voting starts on Wednesday!

District 13, you deserve a State Senator who sits before you and asks, “What do you need from me?”

Who listens to your concerns.
Who answers the tough questions.
Who shows up—even when the conversation is uncomfortable.

You shouldn’t have to wait nearly eight years for that kind of leadership.

🗣Rutherford County is done waiting!

Tonight, neighbors in Senate District 13 packed the room and said it plainly: they want big money out of Tennessee politics. They took the Stand Together pledge to pass the Restore Power to the People Act, because they're tired of a Republican-controlled legislature that answers to corporations before it answers to them.

Their GOP state senator has never held a town hall. Not once. So @senatorcharlaneoliver came to them ‼️

People asked the hard questions about toll lanes, vouchers, and data centers, and they got straight answers. Then they heard from Democratic Nominee @awynnforsenate about what this district could look like with a senator who actually shows up.

The system is rigged because politicians like Do-Nothing Dawn White are bought and sold by corporate money. The people of District 13 are ready to change that.

Vote November 3rd. 🗳️
