@skowheganart is a very special place and I am beyond grateful to have spent my summer there. I have so much crazy love for every single one of you who spent it with me. I don’t really know how to explain or describe my time there and honestly I find it a little overwhelming to reflect 🩅 but I’m just putting this here hoping more and more artists outside America can learn about this strange residency/art school/summer camp that still somehow exists despite all odds and apply! As I learnt about it from an instagram post just like this one :) 1 million hugs to everyone I miss u guys every day 💔 by @charlikleem

Featured in Gender Stories at Walker Art Gallery, @charlikleem’s Gun rack (2025) explores themes of trans-hypermasculinity, craft and the cultural presentation of violence. Through sculpture, Kleeman examines how masculinity is constructed, performed and displayed, inviting viewers to question familiar ideas about gender, identity and power. In this article, Charli invites a 13-year-old to interview them about the sculpture, discussing the inspirations behind Gun rack, their creative process and the conversations they hope the work will spark.

My work ‘Gun Rack’ is on loan to @walkerartgallery in Liverpool till August for their show ‘Gender Stories’, alongside David Hockney, Paula Rego, Catherine Opie, Grayson Perry and many other incredible artists I can’t really believe I’m showing work alongside.

Thanks so much to Charlotte Keenan and Ann Chaplin for this opportunity, and for putting together a great show that includes early career queer artists as well as perspectives on gender throughout the centuries.

Thanks also to everyone else at the Walker that made the whole experience really special <3 taken in Walker Art Gallery by @charlikleem

The work loosely takes the form of the ‘Needle Shower’- an early psychiatric hydrotherapy treatment used from the late 1800s to early 1900s involving high-pressure cold water jets used to shock or punish institutionalised patients in asylums. The intended outcome was to stimulate difficult-to-manage patients’ nervous systems into activity or sedation.

The title references George Parsonage, a Glaswegian artist who rescued over 1,500 people from the River
Clyde in his lifetime. by @charlikleem

What If You Regret It? is a DIY hormone-lab/hunting-shack that reflects the desire within violence that inevitably accompanies starting testosterone. The work acknowledges how the criminalisation of hormone self-regulation creates an absurd and degrading lack of control that trans people have over their bodies. This means that transmasculine people resort to accessing hormones outside of institutions.

Their work centres around the concept of Trans-Hypermasculinity- where transmasculine people radically embody hypermasculine traits, simultaneously reinforcing and dismantling them. It takes as its starting point Scottish deer stalking and its presentation as an ethical form of violence.

The sculptures incorporate references to hunting equipment, 18th-century laboratories, and the endurance of prey animals. The works enacts a complex interplay between these elements, linked by pink liquid pulsating though tubes, and the inherent violent potential in each beautifully hand-crafted element.

‘What If You Regret It’ was made during a period of strategic removal of trans rights in the UK. The work reflects on bodily autonomy, DIY hormone production, bio-hacking, and the need to perform dominance to survive it.

Under the current political climate medical care for trans people will likely become increasingly restricted within the NHS. Without the accidental coalition between transmasculines and steroid junkies, operating outside these institutions would be extremely difficult.
