Pleasure-Seeking in a Deranged World
Executive editor > @roadsandkingdoms
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Our second print issue is out today!

Roads & Kingdoms, Issue 2: The Sixth Taste features 144 pages of deep-cut storytelling from writers, artists, and photographers around the world. Issue 1 won the James Beard Award for food coverage in a general interest publication—and this one goes further.

From the psychedelic Mexi-futurist corn cover by @raulurias__ to dispatches from @olbullough and @yasminkhanstories to a speculative essay on potatoes by @hilleaton that unfolds during a momentary rupture of spacetime, this issue explores the notion of context. How it colors every experience, every taste, every sensation. How it changes everything.

Available at the link in our bio, the issue includes reporting from Sichuan, Sicily, Luanda, and Nayarit. @ultraclay documents the fight to keep the Jamaican coastline in local hands and @eugeniosignoroni tells the story of how Italian wine culture was changed forever by a deadly crime spree in the 1980s, accompanied by never-before-published 1966 photographs that may be the most intimate record of daily life in a Piedmontese provincial osteria from that era.

You’ll also find a conversation with travel industry legend @ricksteveseurope and the second edition of “The R&K 50,” our global list of the restaurants that our favorite chefs, writers, and eaters think of as second homes, with contributions from @padmalakshmi, @rezaian, @julietavenegasp, and more.

“You will not use these recipes,” writes Palestinian artist Samaa Emad Abuallaban (@samaa.gaza) in “To Cook In Gaza,” a feature in our latest print issue that she created while trapped with her family under Israeli blockade. “I wrote them to let you feel how the people in Gaza cooked and ate during the genocide.”

Using photography, collage, recipes, and handwritten notes, Abuallaban documents her community’s daily fight for survival under siege in Gaza—where kitchens once full of joy have been reduced to a single wooden shelf inside a tent.

”I believe our connection to our ancestors and our land must be preserved through the documentation and transmission of stories to the next generation” writes Abuallaban. “I created this work to preserve the truth of what happened here, to uphold the Palestinian narrative, and to keep it alive in our collective memory.”

A belated but very heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out for the Pre-Game Indie Media Brunch that we co-hosted with @saveurmag on the morning of the James Beard Media Awards at the beautiful Txa Txa Kitchen Studio by @txatxaclub in Chicago.

What a pleasure to get to convene a room of people moving the American food world forward, and to see so many old friends in the process.

Major props to Erin Drain (@erindrain), who not only curated the excellent wines on offer but pulled together a killer lineup of sponsors, including @thezeroproof, @cultivamos_usa, and @thefoodcourt.projects. Thank you to @spirittea for the excellent oolongs, @eatframani for the bomb charcuterie, and to @jasperhillfarm and @northcountrysmokehouse for the rest of our extraordinary brunch spread.

It was a joy and an honor to hang with you all on a very special weekend for us!

In southern Goa, the coconut tree is the source of three of the region’s staple beverages: fresh toddy, raw coconut water, and distilled feni.

We’ll be tasting them all this fall in Goa from Nov 8–15, 2026, with one of India’s most influential chefs, Thomas Zacharias (@cheftzac), alongside R&K executive editor Charly Wilder (@charly_wilder). They will guide us through hidden tribal villages, seaside markets, and the backroads of India’s smallest state. On Day 4, we spend the afternoon in the middle of this coconut world at an 11,000 tree plantation closed to the public with Hansel Vaz (@feni_dotor), a local-born storyteller and distiller of the iconic Goan spirit, Feni.

Last November we published our first ever print magazine at Roads & Kingdoms, and this past Saturday the James Beard Foundation honored it with an award for best food coverage. We had been out of the publishing business for a minute. Truth be told, after Tony died, it was too hard to brush ourselves off and survive solely through our journalism. So we created the League of Travelers and began to give people a taste of the world as we’d captured it on the page during our first decade of existence. But storytelling has always been what we do best, and inevitably the gravitational pull brought us back to our core strength. While we try to never place too much stock in awards, we’re also grateful for any chance to celebrate in a business as tricky as ours. So let’s celebrate: to my partner @nthornburgh and our extraordinary executive editor @charly_wilder , the molten core of this creative team; to the dozens of contributors—writers, photographers, designers—who brought this publication to life; and to you, dear reader, who have given us a reason to keep writing through all the pain and privilege, beauty and bullshit the world throws at us. @beardfoundation @roadsandkingdoms @douglas_hughmanick @anml @thisiskultura taken in Barcelona, España by @charly_wilder

The 2027 calendar is here!

Earlier this spring, we tried something we’d never done before. Instead of building our 2027 trip calendar and hoping it worked for people, we asked first. We sent out a survey to our community and then built our slate of trips around their responses.

Now, for the first time, we have a calendar shaped by the people who are going to travel on it. Swipe to see what’s coming. While much of this fall is already sold out—you’ll have to wait until 2027 for Vietnam, Oaxaca, Japan, and Campania—there are still a handful of incredibly good spots on this year’s calendar available to the more spontaneous travelers among you.

Experience a side of Goa most visitors never see.

This November, the influential Kerala-born chef Thomas Zacharias (@cheftzac), founder of the pioneering food-systems platform The Locavore (@thelocavore.in), is leading us south to explore rich local foodways unknown even to most Indians.

The Other Side of Goa — Nov 8–15, 2026.

Joined by Roads & Kingdoms executive editor Charly Wilder (@charly_wilder), Chef Zac will introduce us to the hidden culinary practices and ancestral traditions of the Konkan Coast. We’ll explore ancient Khazan tide-farming systems on Chorao Island, cook hay-smoked mackerel at a Hindu farmstead, spend a day with master distiller Hansel Vaz for a Feni tasting at a table set in the middle of a forest pond, and much more.

This month, we launched The Fix, a new travel guide series that’s part of our twice weekly members-only newsletter. First up: our guide to one of the world’s great food cities, Mexico City.

Every week, we’re reaching out to our global network of some of the most knowledgeable people in food and hospitality—people known in the business as “fixers”—to give you the sharpest, freshest, realest travel intel on a single destination. We started with Mexico City, not only because it’s probably our favorite place in the world to be in January, but because Ana Paola Rivas (@anaprch) perfectly encapsulates what we look for in a fixer.

If you want to know where to eat, what to see, and how to move through Mexico City right now, join Insiders at the link in our bio. Membership starts at $6.50 per week.

Our first print issue has been nominated for two James Beard awards!

Roads & Kingdoms, Issue 1: Pleasure-Seeking in a Deranged World was nominated for overall coverage, and “Caracas Cocuy Crawl,” @tononrafa’s feature on Venezuela’s national firewater, was nominated in the beverage category.

This magazine marks our return to publishing after a long pause following the death of our partner Anthony Bourdain, so it’s particularly meaningful to be recognized in this way, at this moment.

Congratulations to everyone involved, including co-founders/publishers @nthornburgh & @mdgoulding, executive editor @charly_wilder, editor at large @chefjoseandres, co-founder/creative lead @douglas_hughmanick, art directors @thisiskultura and our phenomenal contributors @edelrodriguezstudio, @samaa.gaza, @roham128, @jfierberg, @artep33, @calvingodfrey, @julianahuxtable, @mpmagers, @gonzalezmariaj_, @palisaanderson, @mikey.jauregui, @virgiliocentral, @mattymatheson, @juanescaloname, @nenginelson1, @lawandoyler, @katieparla, @ericripert, @pawkhrua, @reneredzepinoma, @subparparks, @eugeniosignoroni, @tononrafa, @mswanawana, @samyoukilis, @the.bougie.dirtbag, @alejosabugo and many more.

Paris, arguably more than any place on this planet, is a photographer’s city. It’s that particular combination of light and architecture and joie de vivre that launched a billion bad cliches but still, inevitably, delivers. So it’s no surprise that in our quest for the perfect Paris fixer we’d turn to Evan Sung (@evansungnyc), one of the preeminent food and travel photographers of our time.

In the latest edition of our members-only travel guide series The Fix, the New Yorker turned part-time Parisian shares his tips, from hotel recommendations to the under-the-radar restaurants, galleries, and drinking spots to what popular, bougey neighborhood you should avoid staying in at all costs.

Swipe for a preview or get the full guide by joining Insiders, starting at $6.50 per week, at the link in our bio. taken in Paris, France by @charly_wilder

On a bone-cold Tuesday night in Chinatown NYC, we gathered a group of friends and accomplices to celebrate the launch of our first-ever print magazine, an 144-page, art-filled leap of faith in the idea that there’s an appetite for deeply felt, clear-eyed, good-humored storytelling on food, travel, and all that’s in between.

Over lemongrass snail sausage, Bia hơi, and natural wines from the geniuses at @mam.nyc and @lairai.nyc at their newest space @phe.nyc, we talked about R&K’s beginnings as a half-baked Tumblr dreamed up in Yangon. We talked about the bolt from the blue that was Anthony Bourdain, the way our former partner’s passing left us adrift in more ways than one, and how much it means to be putting out a magazine now that feels like the clearest manifestation of what we’ve been about since the beginning.

In attendance were so many of the people who make R&K what it is, from co-founders @nthornburgh and @mdgoulding and executive editor @charly_wilder to the artist behind our first print cover @edelrodriguezstudio and Bourdain-era collaborators like @lauriewoolever, @kwspoon1, and @anupkaphle; as well as indispensable members of the R&K team @mikey.jauregui, @gonzalezmariaj_ , and @jfierberg. Inumerable thanks to everyone who came through and helped make the night a fitting throw-down for this auspicious moment.

But maybe we buried the lead. The magazine is here in our hands, and it’s a thing of beauty. Get yours at the link in our bio, directly from our store or included in Insiders membership.
