My time in Lethbridge felt like a chinook. A total whirlwind of warm feelings and just like that I’m back home. I was so honoured to be the keynote speaker for the @nikkayuko Golden Maple Keirokai and share some of my families’ stories with our elders and southern Alberta Nikkei community. It was so great to meet everyone, see family, meet cousins for the first time (as always happens out west) and share my book too!
I can’t thank the garden enough 🙇🏻‍♀️ どうもありがとうございます。
And then @kahonwinehtha and I ripped around southern Alberta. Saw the worlds biggest dinosaur extruding from a Starbucks, the worlds Biggest dinosaur, Chinese food in vulcan 🖖 and every diner and cinnamon bun inbetween, hiked some Rockies. Head smashed in buffalo jump 🦬 was sick too. Big fan of southern Alberta, not paid to say that. 💁🏻‍♀️

I also still have books for sale in my shop! taken in Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden by @chatperdu

3 new @celebratepeopleshistoryposters about strikes in Montreal! Now available on Justseeds.org @justseeds

On 15 August 1983, 9,500 workers from the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union went on strike in Montreal for the first time in 43 years, in what became known as “La grève de la Fierté.” Women working in the city’s garment factories took a bold stand to protect their jobs and working conditions against layoffs and closures prompted by industrial restructuring and deindustrialization.

In 2007, Montreal-based garment manufacturer Lamour shuttered its Canadian production activities, laying off nearly 500 employees, many of whom had worked at the company for decades. Workers publicly denounced the abysmal conditions at Lamour, where they were locked inside the factory during the night shift and forced to eat meals at their workstations. Over 2007 and 2008, laid-off workers and community organizers at the Immigrant Workers Centre successfully engaged in a struggle to gain compensation for laid off Lamour employees.

En 2007, le fabricant de vêtements montréalais Lamour a mis fin à ses activités de production au Canada, licenciant progressivement près de 500 employé.e.s, dont beaucoup travaillaient pour l'entreprise depuis des décennies. Had a swell and affirming time at @powellstfest last week! 💁🏻‍♀️
I’m so thankful for the opportunity. I got to catch up with old friends, take in my first festival, see the documentary my mom and I are in, and eat inari zushi everyday 🍱 even got some time to check out the new memorial at Hastings Park where my family had to go during internment and the Japanese Canadian WW1 memorial in Stanley park. I hope this is the first of many more Powell Street Festivals in the future! taken in Powell Street Festival by @chatperdu

Great News Everybody! I’ll be giving an artist talk @powellstfest in Vancouver on August 2nd at the ol’ Japanese Language School at 5pm. It’s my first time talking about my book to other humans in public so you should come check that out! I’ve always wanted to go to Powell Street Fest, as an east coaster we hold it down out here but I’m excited to see how the largest community comes together and I’m very honoured to be included in its 50th instalment!
You’ll find me throwing down to Tanko Bushi in the Bon Odori pit 🎏

Been stewing about what’s been happening in Montreal North. Bon Saint Jean! 👖 ⚜️ 👖

« According to a Radio-Canada source, some officers allegedly collected pieces of locs, sometimes called dreadlocks, that had been cut from people during police interventions.

Tickets were also allegedly issued to citizens solely on the basis of their ethnic background, Radio-Canada reports. »
