POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A beautiful gathering yesterday at Jardin Papillon in Chabanel district @dyejardinpapillon (thank you Nick for hosting us!) to launch a series of posters for the @celebratepeopleshistory series distributed by @justseeds called CHABANEL ON STRIKE.

The posters are part of an effort to highlight important moments of collective worker action in Montreal's garment district. The launch photos are by the wonderful @elldarren

I worked on this project in collaboration with my friend @_lauren over the last year. Thank you to @jmacphee for being open to including this series on Montreal worker history in the Celebrate People's History series.

The launch event took place as part of the FLUX festival hosted by @artsinthemargins. Thanks to @raahlab.concordia for helping to spread the word.

There is a link to the Celebrate People's History poster series in my bio.

The historical strike actions highlighted in the series are the 1983 garment workers strike. A wonderful piece by @lisaczech illustrates that, speaking to a strike action that her grandmother, a textile worker, participated in. The series also includes a wonderful piece by Chris Robertson @chatperdu who made a piece about the 2007 organizing on the part of the Immigrant Workers Centre to support a group of Lamour Inc. textile workers who were unjustly dismissed due to corporate outsourcing. The workers won compensation packages as a result of this struggle. The final poster is on the 2024 strike actions of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers @cupwsttp on their strike actions in the area as part of the larger struggle against moves to undercut the public postal service. The photos on the poster were taken by a strike postal worker, Samuel, who joined us yesterday.

Thank you everyone! If you are interested in getting a copy of the posters please let me know.

Join us tomorrow (Saturday) for the launch of the CHABANEL ON STRIKE poster series @dyejardinpapillon at 2pm, 9300 rue Meilleur. This event is taking place as part of the FLUX festival 2026 hosted by @artsinthemargins

The event will launch 3 posters designed by local artists that speak to labour struggles of workers in Montreal's garment district. I worked on coordinating this project with my friend @_lauren over the last year. Thanks to @jmacphee these posters are a part of the larger collaborative and awesome @celebratepeopleshistory project of @justseeds

@elldarren took these photos of the posters for the launch going up and some key Gaza solidarity prints that my friend @jessepurcellprinter of @justseeds made.

@lisaczech worked on an amazing poster about the 1983 strike of textile workers that her grandmother was a part of.

@chatperdu worked on an awesome print to speak to the campaign organized by the Immigrant Workers Centre @iwc_cti to support nearly immigrant 500 textile workers unjustly fired by Lamour Inc. due to corporate global outsourcing, the campaign won them compensation.

Finally there is an awesome print by Guy Incognito that speaks to the fight of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers that is currently ongoing @cupwsttp. They are fighting against the Carney Liberal neoliberal austerity attacks against the public postal sector in Quebec and Canada. The postal workers have held a number of important rallies outside of the Canada Post major depot in Chabanel.

I hope to see you there, link to the event is in my bio. Thank you to @raahlab.concordia for helping to spread the word.

3 new @celebratepeopleshistoryposters about strikes in Montreal! Now available on Justseeds.org @justseeds

On 15 August 1983, 9,500 workers from the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union went on strike in Montreal for the first time in 43 years, in what became known as “La grève de la Fierté.” Women working in the city’s garment factories took a bold stand to protect their jobs and working conditions against layoffs and closures prompted by industrial restructuring and deindustrialization.

In 2007, Montreal-based garment manufacturer Lamour shuttered its Canadian production activities, laying off nearly 500 employees, many of whom had worked at the company for decades. Workers publicly denounced the abysmal conditions at Lamour, where they were locked inside the factory during the night shift and forced to eat meals at their workstations. Over 2007 and 2008, laid-off workers and community organizers at the Immigrant Workers Centre successfully engaged in a struggle to gain compensation for laid off Lamour employees.

A couple of years ago I worked with @divestmcgill in collaboration with Wet’suwet’en elder and climate justice activist Marlene Hale to pressure McGill through a series of events and actions around the fact that the university endowments invest over 4 million each year into TransCanada the oil / gas corporation. This colonial corporate force is building the unwanted Costal GasLink pipeline across Indigenous Wet’suwet’en lands, a project that obviously also boosts the climate emergency by deepening dependence on fossil fuel extractive colonialist frameworks.

This poster was design by @chatperdu and I helped Anissa @sidetracks_collective do the silkscreen. I had a couple left and pasted them up last week.

The message DIVEST FROM DESTRUCTION rings true still around the corporate colonial pipeline going through Indigenous Wet’suwet’en lands but also rings true for the profoundly shocking genocidal violence of the Israeli military and state which is being unleashed on the Palestinian people.

There are many companies that are profiting from this military attack, like Elbit systems, Airbus Aerospace and Safran S.A., which McGill endowment investments supports with staggering amounts.

It is important to continue to find ways to support the work of @sphrmcgill as they sustain the Gaza solidarity encampment that questions the links between McGill and the genocidal colonial violence taking place against the Palestinian people right now.

An ongoing campaign by @divestmcgill to call on McGill to stop investing millions annually (around 4 million a year, background article I worked on for @cdn_dimension in my bio) in TC Energy the company building the Coastal GasLink pipeline on Wet’suwet’en lands against the collective wishes of the community, continues. This poster was designed by @chatperdu and I silkscreened it with a friend Anissa at the @sidetracks_collective space last year. I have been pasting the prints up recently in the city to remind people of this local manifestation of @mcgillu complicity in a colonial and ecologically violent pipeline today.

Walking moments in the last couple of days in the city, plus a beautiful design by @chatperdu to support the @divestmcgill campaign to call on McGill to divest from TC Energy which is building the Coastal GasLink pipeline on Indigenous Wet’suwet’en lands against the wishes of many in the community and beyond, I silkscreened these prints with Anissa at the @sidetracks_collective space, also a print from a series that Aaron Huges @aarhughes of @justseeds worked on highlighting movement slogans and finally a poster for a community show at @casadelpopolo on May 29 at which I will play piano duets, join us !
