Sentinels - a making of. 🦢🦋
Ever tried to paint while filming with your other hand? Keeping up with social media is such a hack. I’m such a perfectionist so making videos like this where the lighting isn’t 100% true to the actual colour of the work grinds my freaking gears. Yet here we are. Enjoy. And bless that algorithm that dictates we spend an ungodly amount of time making videos because photos just don't cut it anymore.

Slow but steady progress on my ‘giant wheel of cheese’. Somedays I feel really frustrated with how long it takes me to paint these pieces. Layers upon layers, a shit tonne of blending, dry brushing, the destruction of so many brushes because of said dry brushing. I see other artists produce work so much quicker and it does get me down a little bit. But then I get to about this stage when the work is starting to take shape and I try to remind myself that the final product will be worth the weeks of time spent. And that something unique will emerge, hopefully resembling the vision I had way back in the beginning. And that I love unicorns and I want to be one, because no two unicorns are the same.

My contribution to @wavescapesa Festival’s Artboard exhibition. The show opens 28 Feb with the auction taking place 9th March at @jackblackstaproom

This artwork is a homage to the beauty of the ocean. The colours and shapes are loosely inspired by adventures to the Great Barrier Reef, which I was lucky enough to visit a couple of times growing up in Australia. As vibrant as it was, even then (some fifteen years ago) we were being schooled about the impact of rising sea temperatures, coral bleaching, and overall habitat destruction of one of the most beautiful places in the world. Since moving to South Africa I've continued to enjoy the ocean in all the fun ways. I’ve been lucky enough to kayak a few times surrounded by a pod of dolphins, but then look closely at the water see and all the micro plastic they’re swimming in.

At the time of working on this piece, I made the choice to highlight beauty instead destruction, though both are two sides of the same coin when it comes to saving our oceans. Sometimes all the destruction makes me too damn sad.
