Some foods carry more than flavour.

Yesterday at the @fao Seed to Food Exhibition, I shared #fonio with Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia’s former President and Africa’s first elected female head of state.

I watched her taste a grain that West African hands have grown and cooked for centuries. Her kind words about it stayed with me.

The dish was simple and the grain is humble, but the meaning behind both runs deep. Fonio thrives where little else will. It asks little of the soil and gives back nourishment, livelihoods and memory.

This is the work I hold close: bringing what our land has always given back to the centre of the table. As @fao Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Africa, I carry the farmers who grow it into every room I’m invited into, so the world can taste why it matters.
