What better way to celebrate the summer season than with a plate of fried green tomatoes?! Let me know in the comments how much you enjoy this recipe. Make sure to grab your own bottle of @theheatland hot sauce today!

RECIPE:
4 med size green tomatoes
1 cup cornmeal
1 tbsp kosher salt
1/2 tbsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
2 eggs
1 1/2 cup oil

Slice tomatoes 1/4” thick. Season cornmeal and blend. Whisk eggs. Dredge tomatoes beginning with the egg, & then cornmeal. Fry over medium-high heat. Flip after 2 minutes. Cook until golden brown. Cool over drain rack. Serve hot.

Meet Chef Aqui!

Professional chef. Entrepreneur. Cookbook author. Creator of his own line of ridiculously delicious tomato jams. And, genuinely, one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

And, I mean… how could I NOT paint that smile?!

Aqui is a friend of mine here in Kansas City, and when I started thinking about faces I wanted to include in my growing Skin Deep portrait series, his immediately came to mind.

And this one was just FUN to paint.

Aqui’s portrait gave me some new things to explore - the subtle shifts between warm and cool color in darker skin, the way a broad smile changes the forms of the cheeks, eyes, and mouth, the character of mature skin, and all those fantastic little gray and white hairs woven through his beard.

This project started as an exploration of how I use layers of transparent color to build believable skin, but it’s becoming something more: a collection of real people, real faces, and all the beautiful variation that comes with them. And Aqui brought a whole lot of life to this one.

He’s also the author of "Spring Aqui: A Harvest Celebration in 3 Plates" and creator of his own line of tomato jams - seriously, the man knows what to do with a tomato. 🍅

Thanks for letting me paint you, Aqui, and for being such a great friend and all-around good human.

On a wish and a prayer, this past winter, I applied for @theporterhousekc small business development program. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was walking into a space that would change the trajectory of my entire life. It was demanding, we had to meet 3 hrs, after work, every Tuesday, for a period of 15 wks. From the first day, I was challenged in ways that made me highly uncomfortable. Shit, I didn’t even have a registered business. I began to doubt my self and wonder, what am I even doing in this space? They will soon find out I’m an imposter and everyone’s going to reject and ridicule me. The evening I was going to quit I took a chance and hollered to our facilitator that I’m struggling mentally and emotionally, and I don’t want to quit but I don’t think I can do this anymore. Y’all, that man saw me in all my brokenness and crocodile tears, and loved me all the way back to life. My cohort members consistently spoke power into me. Through @theporterhousekc I’ve been able to walk into rooms that were beyond my reach. They saw me and believed in me. Thank you. Though I didn’t win the pitch, I am walking away a champion. I am different. I am better. We graduated last wk, and I couldn’t be more honored to humbly receive my certificate. Shoutout to everybody with a dollar and a dream. Go make it happen. Watch me work KC.
