Meet Chef Aqui!

Professional chef. Entrepreneur. Cookbook author. Creator of his own line of ridiculously delicious tomato jams. And, genuinely, one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

And, I mean… how could I NOT paint that smile?!

Aqui is a friend of mine here in Kansas City, and when I started thinking about faces I wanted to include in my growing Skin Deep portrait series, his immediately came to mind.

And this one was just FUN to paint.

Aqui’s portrait gave me some new things to explore - the subtle shifts between warm and cool color in darker skin, the way a broad smile changes the forms of the cheeks, eyes, and mouth, the character of mature skin, and all those fantastic little gray and white hairs woven through his beard.

This project started as an exploration of how I use layers of transparent color to build believable skin, but it’s becoming something more: a collection of real people, real faces, and all the beautiful variation that comes with them. And Aqui brought a whole lot of life to this one.

He’s also the author of "Spring Aqui: A Harvest Celebration in 3 Plates" and creator of his own line of tomato jams - seriously, the man knows what to do with a tomato. 🍅

Thanks for letting me paint you, Aqui, and for being such a great friend and all-around good human.

Lots more faces to come…

Tune in to Vital Vibrations Radio with DJ Jamms today featuring guest interview with Chef Aqui 🧑🏿‍🍳 on 90.1FM www.kkfi.org @kkfi901fm at 12:30pm CST

Aqui Greadington, is a classically trained chef, entrepreneur and community leader, who finds great joy in channeling his creative energy to innovate in the kitchen and to also expand consciousness through food. His earliest experiences with creativity were through music and poetry. His grandmother and father provided him early exposure to the magic of food exploration in both the garden and the kitchen. As an adult he returned to the culinary world after realizing that food is one of the core pleasures that make him feel truly alive. Aqui’s professional culinary experience began with roles in farm-to-table and notable fine dining restaurants, to his own business providing private and corporate catering services, his own line of tomato jams, and now featured in his self published cookbook; SPRING AQUI: A Harvest Celebration in 3 Plates.
