This will probably be the only thing you hear from me today.
I've been telling many of you this for YEARS. Maybe you'll believe it from this sister.

1) My grandmother, Florine Tolliver. B. May, 1925 in Corsicana, Texas. Her father Jim Tolliver was half Apache Indian from Hempstead, Waller, Texas. His mother, Elizabeth, was an Apache woman born in Texas when it was still Mexico.

2) My paternal grandfather's aunt Alice (Aggie) Flemmons. A mixed Muscogee Creek woman.
B. October 1896 in Arkansas. They migrated to Oklahoma and settled in a Creek Freedmen town called Red Bird, just outside of Boley.

I grew up with my grandma Flo, eating fry bread and "Indun tacos", and making chock to drink on holidays and special occasions (I keep trying to convince my mom to make a batch and teach me the recipe).

Despite all attempts to erase us, we're still here. #fba

WE ARE SAFE!

We have trees down all over the property. But, our house took everything #hurricanelowell had to throw at it and never even shook.

We have no power. We have no access to cellular or internet service. @jasonaltf4 is driving us around town hoping to catch a signal, and we found a small one down at Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa.

We still have no idea what happened, as we have no access to any news sources. We managed to talk to our daughter in California, and she says what she's seen on the news is very devastating. People on the south side and the west side need all of your prayers and any resources you can offer.

Tourists need to take this time to go home. We have no resources to accommodate you. We need our resources for our local families. So, yeah. Go home.

PLEASE SHARE THIS. Screenshot it, repost it to your stories, text it to family, and send it to group chats.

If you have family, friends, employees, customers, or property in Kauaʻi County (Kauaʻi + Niʻihau), make sure they see this update today—before conditions deteriorate tonight.
If you’re on island and have verified local info (shelters, road closures, supply distribution), drop it in the comments with a link/source so we can keep this thread accurate.

Emergency alert for Kauaʻi County—Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. This is from the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center, 2:00 pm HST today.

They’re saying conditions are deteriorating for Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, and Oʻahu. A hurricane warning is in effect for Kauaʻi County, which means hurricane conditions are expected and preparations need to be rushed to completion.

As of 2 pm, the center is about 230 miles southwest of Līhuʻe, moving north-northeast at 18 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds around 110 miles per hour. Hurricane-force winds extend about 60 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend about 175 miles.

They expect hurricane conditions for Kauaʻi County beginning this afternoon or evening, and the core is forecast to pass near or just west of Niʻihau tonight into early Tuesday.

Main hazards: damaging winds—stronger over hills and mountains—heavy rain with 6 to 10 inches expected and up to 16 inches possible, which can cause flash flooding and mudslides, storm surge 2 to 4 feet in Kauaʻi County with destructive waves, tornadoes possible, and life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Please finish securing your home or business now, before dark. Charge your devices, keep emergency alerts loud, stay away from beaches and streams, and if you’re in a flood-prone area have your go-bag and documents ready. If you have verified shelter or road closure info, drop it in the comments with a source.

Pray for Hawaii. Be ready to kokua 🙏🏽

Hanalei Bridge is CLOSED.
Conditions will worsen in Hanalei Valley. Batten down the hatches, in Hanalei, Wainiha, and Ha'ena.

Beware of rock slides, landslides, washed out bridges west of town, and potential tornadoes and water spouts.

These alerts are coming out on Kaua'i right now.

If you didn't prepare, it's too late.

Lowell defied the "experts" and is moving northeast on a path towards Ni'ihau and Kaua'i.
According to my GFS forecast, Lowell plans to enter the chat at 2am.

I've had plenty of coffee and plan to stay up all night.

My husband, @jasonaltf4 sent the drone up to check conditions today as Hurricane Lowell, currently a Category 4 storm, nears the western Hawaiian Islands of Ni'ihau and Kaua'i.

Lowel has begun to make the dreaded turn to the north and is expected to track slightly to the north east bringing it perilously close to Kaua'i and Ni'ihau, Sunday into Tuesday.

There is still a lot of uncertainty in the track once Lowell makes the turn to the north.
The western Islands have been told to prepare for tropical stormnforce winds that could reach upwards of 75mph, higher at upper elevations and near slopes, and up to a foot of rain.

And, thats the forecast without a direct eyewall hit.

We are not in the clear. Do not relax if you live in the western Hawaiian islands, or on Big Island. Big Island is expected to see torrential rainfall as it catches the tail bands of rain from Lowell.

Gather supplies. Have an evacuation plan. Follow me here for updates as I will be spending the weekend covering this storm.

Stay Safe, Kaua'i 💙🙏🏽

NHC/CPHC 5pm update: Lowell is still a major hurricane (~130 mph). It may reorganize and could even strengthen again in the next 24–48 hrs (roughly Fri evening through Sat evening). A northward turn is still forecast around ~72 hrs (roughly Sunday afternoon/evening), which could bring the center near/just west of the westernmost main Hawaiian Islands late Mon–early Tue. Wind probabilities already show meaningful chances of sustained damaging winds for Niʻihau and west Kauaʻi. Exact track is still lower confidence, but NHC says HI could see storm surge/wind/rain impacts early next week and life-threatening surf/rip currents in the next several days. Prep while the window is open.

What the 5:00 pm NHC/CPHC discussion says (plain English)

1) Lowell is still extremely strong

Hurricane Hunter aircraft measured very high winds.

They set the current intensity to
 115 kt (~130 mph).

Pressure around 943 mb (low pressure = strong storm).

Translation: even with some wobble in organization, this is a major hurricane and should be treated like one.

2) The storm looks a bit messier right now, possibly due to an eyewall replacement cycle (ERC)

They describe:

eye “clouded over”

eyewall tops warmer/less symmetric

hints of an eyewall replacement cycle

Translation:
major hurricanes sometimes temporarily look worse while they “rebuild” their inner structure. That can mean short-term weakening or “ugly” satellite presentation, followed by re-strengthening once the cycle completes.

3) Environment stays favorable for ~3 days → could strengthen again

They explicitly say:

high ocean heat content + light shear should persist for ~3 days

could allow re-intensification

some models show strengthening
24–48 hours

Translation:
the next couple days are not a “safe weakening trend.” It may stay strong or even get stronger before later weakening.

4) Weakening is expected after ~72 hours… but it may still be major near Hawaiʻi

They say:

after ~72h, increasing southwesterly shear should cause “substantial weakening”

however, it is still forecast to be at or near major hurricane strength at closest approach to Hawaiʻi

Translation:
even if weakening starts, t taken in Kauai, Hawaii by @chefmia_g

"The Three Amigos"
Hurricane Marie to the east, a category 1 storm. Hurricane Karina in the middle, a category 3. Hurricane Lowell in the west, moving towards the Hawaiian Islands.

A Super El Niño has brought unprecedented hurricane activity to the Eastern and Central Pacific.
This is an historic event.
