Megan Rothenberg, Ph.D. candidate in Chemistry, studies hydrogels, the material behind products like contact lenses, aloe vera gels, wound dressings, and more. Their performance depends on getting the consistency just right, but predicting that consistency during design often requires extensive trial and error.

During CSU’s 3MT competition, Megan proposed a new strategy: instead of searching for a new base ingredient each time, chemists could use one reliable base material and adjust the number of connections between its building blocks. More connections create stronger, tougher hydrogels, simplifying the design of materials for medical and other critical applications. Megan Rothernberg stands in front of sign that says "a single building block to design all materials" taken in Colorado State University by @chemcsu

Today, the Department of Chemistry Celebrates International Women and Girls in Science Day! We recognize our amazing students, researchers, and faculty who dedicate themselves to chemistry and scientific innovation every day of the year. A few recent highlights include:

Today, Professor Akiko Nakamura hosted the Global Women's Breakfast, an international event celebrated every year.

Professor Debbie Crans is being recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Conference on Catalysis and Reaction Engineering.

Our newest faculty member, Professor Romana Jarosova highlighted her lab researchers, Mia Ambuski and Dorothea Lee:

"Mia is the first-ever student in the Jarosova Lab, leading exciting research to better understand ADHD. She is developing an innovative zebrafish model to investigate gene-environment interactions in ADHD."

"Dora is a trailblazer in the Jarosova Lab, taking on the pressing challenge of chemobrain—a cognitive condition that affects a significant percentage of patients undergoing chemotherapy. With her innovative spirit and determination, Dorothea is leading research to uncover how commonly used chemotherapy drugs contribute to this debilitating issue."
