𒀭 Introducing our zero material open call selection panel: Chen Liang-Jung

@chen_liangjung is an artist and researcher interested in how artefacts and interface can be observed, redirected and reconfigured as creative material. Her practice creates intervention in the infrastructures that quietly shape everyday life.

In her project UK Indefinite Leave to Remain Application Fee (2025), Liang-Jung smuggles her own immigration process as artwork — treating bureaucratic experience and administrative labour as artistic media.

⚑ zero material is the perfect opportunity for an artist with a conceptual or visual arts practice looking to develop a new body of work alongside a public presentation in Spring 2027.

❥ Artist fee: £2,500 + production budget

aesthetics is not only about creating, but experiencing and evaluating, noticing, identifying, sorting, picking and rejecting, making hierarchies, or making relations.
⠀
maybe the 20th century capitalism has finally been conquered by what we call unrealism: a comparatively skill-less genre of art made from arts, for the lolz, just to see what machines can do. if modernism brought the everyday into the studio, ai art brings the studio into the everyday. the demuseumification of the object — its virtual proliferation, its abundance, its reproductivity — smashes the decontextualisation of objects. we are multiple. we contain multitudes.

today we launched the first programme i’ve been developing at kakilang since joining in october 2025, along with its open call ☆彡
⠀
𒀭zero material manifesto: in an age of scarcity and excess, what forms of art making remain relevant? zero material recognises that each material — whether tangible or intangible — carries its own agency waiting to be exercised creatively. informed by diasporic experience, it proposes unorthodox approaches like hacking, smuggling, and piggybacking as artistic practice.

the programme grew out of my own practice really, where i find myself constantly patching together resources from everywhere to sustain an arts practice in a city like london as a migrant. i’m chuffed to work with can yang on the visual identity, which captures the tongue-in-cheek spirit perfectly. and a special thanks to rhine bernardino for joining the selection panel.

some of my working scribbles from the one-day workshop i gave to the ma visual communication students at royal college of arts back in mid march.

the starting point was ‘zero material’ — a term i have to credit daniel samuel suter for coining it while commenting on my work — the art-making method that proposes to make work with less.
⠀⠀
the notes trace two threads that emerged that day: the uncanny connection between dust and migration, and its mapping. still reminiscing on the extrapolation process, and currently building this concept into something bigger… coming soon!

a gathering around eggs, curated by ola otog at yen-chao lin’s studio. we explored different sides of the egg — making, cooking, and materiality. my contribution was a series of makeshift installations putting eggs into action.
⠀
two years ago, when ola first introduced us to the incredible pysanka technique, the ukrainian easter eggs decorated with beeswax and dyes, i was completely hooked. very happy we got to host something again and share this magical technique and culture with more friends.

and special thanks to yen-chao for activating the installation for this casual documentation. a tribute to the egg rack made a disclaimer series i made back in 2020
