⠀ interview with anima magazine, words by ayla angelos. we talk about vernacular hardware, why these anonymous objects carry a quiet form of zeitgeist, and why documenting things that already exist so effectively has made me more cautious about making anything new. link in bio. ⠀ 📇 www.anima-magazine.com/articles/inside-liang-jung-chens-hardware-archive ⠀ @anima__magazine @aylaangelos @chen_liangjung

⠀ ⚑ Open Call: Kakilang is commissioning one ESEA artist with a conceptual or visual arts practice to develop a new body of work, with a public presentation in spring 2027. ⠀ 𒀭zero material manifesto: In an age of scarcity and excess, what forms of art making remain relevant? zero material recognises that each material, whether tangible or intangible, carries its own agency that awaits to be exercised creatively — informed by diasporic experience, it proposes unorthodox approaches like hacking, smuggling and piggybacking as artistic practice. ⠀ ❥ Artist fee: £2,500 + production budget ⛸︎ Open call deadline: 10 August 2026 ⠀ ☛ For full details, visit the link in bio: www.kakilang.org.uk/2026-open-call-zero-material ⠀ ❛ Programme developed by Liang-Jung Chen @chen_liangjung ❛ Visual identity designed by Can Yang @can.grafik ⠀ ✤ With thanks to Rhine Bernardino @rhineandshine for joining the selection panel

A couple of days to go before our next gathering around food - this one around wild matter. Here’s a little bts from our last one, where we gathered around the egg as ingredient, object and idea. Together with @liangjung_chen @yenchao.lynx Gatherings around food is a series of one-evening collective events I started, each one a new collaboration with a different artist, designer or food practitioner. A rethinking of what a supper club can be into a material practice of food and ways of sharing a table differently.

_ A Gathering Around Eggs Curated by @olaotog Supported by @liangjung_chen & @yenchao.lynx A Gathering Around Eggs was a very special evening where we gathered, played, created, and shared eggs as a meal, a game, and a yoking activator. Ab ovo — Latin for “from the egg,” from the beginning. A form we all know. Nourishing, perfect. The same in a series, yet each one different. No sides, no angles, just an enigma that keeps giving us more to explore. 📸 1: Installation set up in Bow Quarters, once upon a time a match factory in East London 2: Egg rolling exercice conceived by @liangjung_chen 3: My wonderful collaborators @olaotog and @liangjung_chen hard at work! 4: The Menu 5 - 6 - 7: The Making 8: The accident around eggs... #eggs #eggart #eggdye #eggrolling #eggshellinlay

Another gathering, this time around eggs. Making, eating, sharing. For this one, I chose the egg as a metaphor for something whole. A place where we can all fit. Ab ovo — Latin for “from the egg,” from the beginning. A form we all know. Nourishing, perfect. The same in a series, yet each one different. No sides, no angles, just an enigma that keeps giving us more to explore. Together with @yenchao.lynx in her studio, and @liangjung_chen , we transformed the space into one evening’s experience - a collaborative reflection on the egg. A beautiful gathering around food as material, with more to come. Forever grateful to @mark.otog for always helping me in such ventures.

An impromptu assembly before the next gathering around food, exploring the egg as a vessel. A look at its materiality, its history, its parallels, and its fundamental architecture as a starting point for thinking, making, and eating.

Last weekend we hosted an evening of commensality, exploring ways of sharing the table, eating and the stories behind food. This time, the focus was on bread. 20 breads, all shapes, all backgrounds. No cutlery, no other food, only bread, water, and wine. Breaking it together felt as a journey through layers of flavours and stories, each tied to a person, a memory. Thank you to @liangjung_chen for supporting the evening with an edible installation and helping shape the space. Thank you @mark.otog for helping this come true. And thank you to everyone who attended. There will be more soon.

From ‘sounding’ the borders, to ‘crossing’ the territories, to ‘reverberating’ together, as winter slowly turns toward the season of blossoms, three chapters of Living, Rehearsing… have unfolded at @ydp_space 🌸 In some ways, the live programme itself became a long durational performance. Conspiring, and at times improvising with YDP curators Erin @erinmoving and Billy @billytanng , we opened doors of the unknown and witnessed many powerful meetings between artists, moments of vulnerability, endurance through time, and blisters on the skin… these moments went by like a second, then what’s next? What happens when rehearsal time is over? When the room is no longer occupied? We asked what is left behind, and in these in-between spaces, small indexical traces remain in the space of @ydp_space , physically and sonically, to prompt you to remember or to imagine what happened. On view till 21 March, these traces now linger as a ghostly layer where past and present coexist. They’re not there to hint finality, as rehearsing does not always point to one. Also this is not the end of rehearsing… Stay tuned, for the final chapter! ~ The slides here feature a mix (and remix) of works and traces by artists contributing to the Living, Rehearsing… programme, including Aliaskar Abarkas, Yingmei Duan, Li Yilei, Joshua Serafin with Pierre Bayet (aka Fake Moss) and Gorkem Sen, Sriwhana Spong with Milo McKinnon, Swilipino, Yan Jun, KIMVI, Woody Kwong, Rie Nakajima, Osamu Shikichi, Abbas Zahedi with Dave Meckin, Kelvin Atmadibrata, Liang-Jung Chen in collaboration with Kai Chareunsy, Hanako Hayakawa, Okkyung Lee and Jin Hao Li. The 50–min long sound loop playing in the building is accumulated and remixed by @andrej.bako The beautiful leaflets are designed by @godabud Operational support and emotional care by the YDP team throughout @junjunbackwards @eleanord @nanaka_kishi @cindaymorning @claric3blanche @campfiiion Last but not least, gratitude for the vision of @xs_y , without you this dream in rehearsals would not come true! 🤍
