@chettlehrer guitarist and founder of LA’s Wasted Youth stopped by @thepunkrockmuseum yesterday. Here is us in the jam room playing his original WY Dan Armstrong guitar and amp. Did you know Chett’s guitar is the second most played guitar after Joan Jett. Such a rad day in Vegas.

I recently took this photo of two of my very good friends, the incomparable @edwardcolver and @laswastedyouthofficial @chettlehrer. These two men have been indelibly linked by Edward’s Chuck Burke “Front Flip” photo (the most iconic hardcore punk photo ever shot) which appeared on the back cover of Wasted Youth’s “Reagan’s In” LP in 1981. The tie-in between the photo and the band is the LA’s Wasted Youth sticker Burke has on the back of his thigh. I first met Edward when I was a teenage photographer and he was so kind and gracious to me, even letting me stand in front of him to take photos. I photographed Chett and LA’s Wasted Youth a few times. Their live show was insane as anyone who was there would attest. Hats off to these two for paving the way for all that came after them. @thepunkrockmuseum #punkphotography #concertphotography #punk #punkrock #punkhistory by @chettlehrer

Having the opportunity to see The Rolling Stones, especially with the classic lineup (after Brian Jones), was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. There are concerts you enjoy, and then there are performances that stay with you forever. The Stones were never just a band, they became a force of nature that forever changed the course of rock and roll.

Keith Richards is, without question, one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of all time. The sheer volume of timeless songs and unforgettable riffs he has created is almost beyond comprehension. His playing isn’t about speed or technical flash, it’s about feel, soul, attitude, and groove. The riffs he has written are woven into the DNA of rock music itself. They come from a place that very few musicians could ever hope to understand, let alone create. To me, Keith is one of the ultimate riff masters, a true musical genius whose originality and unmistakable style can never be duplicated.

Of course, none of it would have been the same without the incredible chemistry of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Brian Jones, Mick Taylor, Ronnie Wood, and everyone who helped shape the band’s extraordinary legacy over the decades. Each member brought something unique, and together they created a body of work that has inspired countless musicians and stood the test of time.

For more than 64 years, The Rolling Stones have continued to perform, record, and inspire audiences around the world, an achievement matched by very few artists in the history of popular music. Formed in 1962, they remain one of the longest running and most influential rock bands ever, proving that true greatness isn’t measured only by longevity, but by the lasting impact your music has on generations of people.

The Rolling Stones didn’t just make history, they helped write the soundtrack of our lives. Their music, passion, swagger, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to their craft continue to remind us why rock and roll will always matter.

Long live The Rolling Stones.

There’s always hope, and you can never say never, but in my lifetime I don’t believe there will ever be another David Bowie, his chemistry, creativity, musicianship, and artistic vision was truly one of a kind.

I was fortunate to have an older brother who took me to see David Bowie on the Heroes Tour in 1978 at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. I was already listening to Bowie’s music before that concert, but seeing him perform live confirmed that I was witnessing a true musical genius. He continually reinvented himself. His music, image, style, and artistic direction were always evolving. He wasn’t afraid to take risks, and that fearless creativity is what made him one of the most influential artists in the history of rock music.

Mick Ronson’s contributions during Bowie’s early years were nothing short of extraordinary. His guitar playing, songwriting, arrangements, and unmistakable tone helped define an era and created some of the greatest rock music ever recorded. Together, Bowie and Ronson were simply magical. They pushed each other to heights that few musical partnerships have ever reached, and their work continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans around the world.

If you’ve never seen David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars, I highly encourage you to find it on YouTube. It’s an incredible performance that captures two musical giants at the absolute peak of their creative powers. It isn’t just a concert, it’s a masterclass in artistry, originality, and performance, and essential viewing for anyone who truly loves rock music.

I feel incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity to witness David Bowie live. It remains one of the defining musical experiences of my life, and every time I revisit that era, I’m reminded that true artistic greatness comes from having the courage to constantly evolve while remaining completely authentic.

This is an extraordinarily rare photograph of @jimihendrix. Throughout his career, he was almost always seen playing a Fender Stratocaster, with the occasional appearance of a Gibson Flying V. However, photographs of him performing with a black Gibson Les Paul Custom are among the rarest of all.

This iconic image was captured by the legendary photographer @elliott_landy_photography during Jimi Hendrix’s performance at the historic Fillmore East in New York City on May 10, 1968. It documents one of the few occasions Hendrix took the stage with a black Gibson Les Paul Custom, making it one of the most significant photographs in rock and roll history.

In my opinion, Jimi Hendrix remains the greatest guitarist ever to pick up a guitar. He wasn’t just a revolutionary guitarist—he was also a brilliant songwriter whose lyrics, creativity, and vision forever changed music. His groundbreaking electric blues playing, fearless experimentation, and unmistakable sound redefined what the electric guitar could do and inspired generations of musicians around the world.

I truly believe there will never be another artist quite like Jimi Hendrix. His influence transcends music, and his legacy continues to inspire guitarists and music lovers more than half a century later.

Best regards,

There’s no question about it, Ozzy Osbourne is one of my all-time favorite frontmen. I was fortunate enough to see him perform with the original Black Sabbath, and then follow his incredible solo career beginning with the legendary Randy Rhoads, followed by Jake E. Lee, Joe Holmes, and Zakk Wylde. Every era was unique, and every performance was unforgettable.

Ozzy’s contribution to music is nothing short of legendary. His influence on heavy metal and rock is immeasurable, and his voice helped define an entire genre. Growing up, listening to Black Sabbath at an early age inspired me to pick up the guitar and played a huge role in shaping my own musical journey.

One of the greatest moments of my life happened when I was 16 years old. I brought my guitar into West L.A. Music for a repair, and the technician told me, “Come check out something really cool.” When I opened the guitar case, I couldn’t believe what I was looking at, it was Tony Iommi’s famous black Gibson SG with the cross inlays running up the neck. Even though it was left-handed, I was able to hold it and strum a few chords. For a young guitarist, that was an unforgettable experience that I’ll never forget.

My favorite Ozzy record has always been Speak of the Devil. That live album, featuring Brad Gillis on guitar, Rudy Sarzo on bass, and Tommy Aldridge on drums, is absolutely incredible. The energy, musicianship, and performances are second to none. Brad Gillis brought his own style and personality to those classic Black Sabbath songs, making the album one of the greatest live heavy metal recordings ever released.

Thank you, Ozzy, for a lifetime of unforgettable music and inspiration. Your legacy has inspired millions of musicians around the world, and your impact on rock and heavy metal will live on forever.

Best regards,
Chett Lehrer
