Last weekend we closed on our show “This could be// The Permanent Rebellion at @blancgallerychicago! This was an amazing experience to be a part of, thank you to the team at Blanc and to @knowmynamebutikeepmyfaith for bringing us all together.

This was my first large-scale fiber piece, titled “At Odds, Yet Hopeful” about how we many of us are psychologically, emotionally, and socially at a cross-roads amidst the pressure of our modern capitalist society. I’m excited to share that my piece called “At Odds, Yet Hopeful” will be in the upcoming show, “This Could Be//The Permanant Rebellion” curated by Imani Harmon.

I am so grateful to be included with so many other incredibly talented artists! Though I have had some awesome opportunities to show my work in the past, this is quite special because it will be my first time showing work in a gallery setting.

Join us for the opening ceremony, which will be this coming Friday at Blanc gallery in Bronzeville from 6-9pm. The show will be up for a few weeks following the opening, so if you can’t make it then, come by to see the work when you have some time! taken in Blanc Gallery by @cheytea

Week 1 of Printing on Fabric Workshop with @jess_atieno! 9am - 3pm every day for 3 weeks! 😮‍💨

These are skills that I have long wanted to learn and I’m excited to be incorporating them into my practice. I’ve kind of fallen in love with printing and manipulating fabric and I want to bring some of this quality into my digital work as well. This way of working is helping me to expand my thinking, and learn how to let go of control. I find I learn so much about life from making—especially from working with fabric, which can be unpredictable.

I got this Afro-Atlantic Histories book and bell hooks’ Art on My Mind from a used bookstore online. Somehow people think that Black art and/or art about Black people is something that has recently emerged, but attention is not the main validating factor for something to exist or be important.

I attended a tribute event for the late George E. Johnson, who was a pioneer in the Black haircare business, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. The organization was founded by the late Rev. Jesse Jackson and continues to serve Chicago communities through health and educational programs, and legal advocacy. They also have offices in NY, Oakland, Atlanta and more.

Seeing the long history of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition was inspiring. We went to their Saturday breakfast, which really helped me understand more of the local concerns here on the South Side.

Willem de Kooning show at the Art Institute. Really learned a lot looking at his work. He’s not an artist I have looked at in depth, but his mixed media technique was interesting to me, and struck me as a very graphic approach to art-making.

I was also reminded that an artist’s career spans their whole life, and helped me put into perspective that I do not need to constantly strive to make masterpieces of art, but make art that brings me joy and shares a story, because that’s the point!

I’ve been learning how to photograph my own work. I know I’m doing a lot of things incorrectly — trying to teach myself! This was my first time breaking out LED studio lights on my own to use them.

The light in the stairwells of Sharp building are just so beautiful.

I think the light that comes through windows are like a glimpse into our spiritual world, somehow.

I’ve been obsessed with printing. Printing on paper, printing on fabric — then using those prints in larger compositions. This one was inspired by a linocut print I did from looking at wind maps of the U.S.🌀

This one I painted on paper, then transferred on fabric by using the heat press, then cut up and sewed the fabric into the “crown” of the piece I was working on. by @cheytea

Some design work from the last 2 years:

1. A visual storytelling of Jorge Luis Borges’ story, The Garden of Forking Paths, imagined through the eyes of a Forensic Historian. Images were all taken, made or photoshopped by me. As well as the layout, typography, and physical book construction.

2. Somewhere in the Windy City — A Psychological Mapping of the Chicago Riverwalk. I used my own prints and impressions of the sky, wind, and water as the basis for a layering of graphics and text.

3. Set design proposal for the Mannequin’s Ball - using color, fabric, light and space to abstract the political and social themes in the famous play.

4. Needs Red — A photo essay about my memories, emotions, and associations of Red. by @cheytea

Excited to share that I’ll be supporting a class taught by khloe swanson starting in the end of June titled “Black Feminist Modernisms.”

The course will cover Black women’s contributions to spatial design and theory through architecture, poetry, and literature. We will explore the works of Audre Lorde, June Jordan, bell hooks, Saidiya Hartman, and more.

The class will meet on zoom every Tuesday from 6-8pm EST/ 5-7pm CST. June 23 – July 21st.

Wow, two years deep into my MFA program, with one more year to go!

Now that I’ve had a moment to reflect, what’s really hitting me is how much I’ve learned. I’ve worked to craft my own experience while at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

It has been quite an enlightening experience: So far, I’ve learned about graphic design, set and stage design, installation art, fiber-based art, printmaking, 3D modeling, book-making and publishing, arts administration, and the psychology of space. I’m not sure how I managed that 😂, but I truly feel like I’ve burrowed my way into all the nooks and crannies of my creative interests. I can see how it’s all funneling together, and I look forward to sharing more of my process.

Visited the Frank Lloyd Wright house today in Oak Park — Architecture, like art, you just have to see in person. The photos don’t do it justice.

I really enjoyed the attention to flow of space, sightlines, material, and details, the custom built-in furniture, lighting, stained glass, and artwork throughout the home and studio.

I especially loved his abstract interpretation of nature because it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot in my own work both graphically and artistically! 💚 taken in Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio by @cheytea
