HBCU Kings and Queens carry more than a title. They carry the culture, the history, and the pride of their entire campus every time they step onto the yard. That is why we at Watch The Yard are launching a new series dedicated to introducing you to the leaders wearing the crown this year, continuing with North Carolina Central University.

Mister North Carolina Central University Malachi Griddine is a senior Public Relations major with a minor in Business Administration from Fayetteville, North Carolina, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., initiated in Spring 2024. The 84th Miss North Carolina Central University Mykenzi Davis-Cowart is a senior Biomedical Science major from St. Petersburg, Florida, and a soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., initiated in Spring 2024. Together, Griddine (@chi2raw ) and Davis-Cowart (@kenzi.kayy_ ) represent NCCU’s Eagle Nation with a shared commitment to service and preparation.

Watch The Yard put out an open call to HBCU Kings and Queens across the country and we were able to interview Griddine and Davis-Cowart about their reign.

This isn’t simply a new chapter for the Royal Court. It’s the establishment of a new standard, one that will be remembered by the legacy it leaves behind.

This ΑΦΑ Founder’s Day shoot is inspired by my line name, Lucky Luciano, and embodies the bold, sophisticated energy of the Italian gangster era. The aesthetic pays homage to the legacy and spirit of my chapter, the ΓANGSTA ΓB chapter, merging timeless style with unapologetic strength. This shoot represents more than just imagery—it’s a celebration of the character, leadership, and excellence that Alpha men have upheld for 118 years. Happy founders day to the oldest & coldest fraternity. ❄️

North Carolina Central University has witnessed a historic milestone. Malachi Griddine has been officially elected as the 27th Mister North Carolina Central University for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Griddine makes history as the first student in the university’s history to be elected to serve on North Carolina Central University Royal Court for four consecutive years:
• 27th Mister North Carolina Central University-Elect (2026–2027)
• Mister Junior (2025–2026)
• Mister Sophomore (2024–2025)
• Mister Freshman (2023–2024)

Through his powerful “Saints Over Sinners” campaign, Malachi has championed the message of progression over perfection. His legacy of excellence is further solidified as a Spring 2024 initiate of the Gamma Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

From his start as Mister Freshman to now becoming the face of the institution, Malachi’s journey is a testament to consistency, growth, and an unwavering commitment to the NCCU community.
