Some of my favorite photographs happen because I decided not to direct anything.

At this wedding at La Jolla Country Club, the second the ceremony ended and this couple walked back down the aisle as newlyweds, I could feel the entire room shift, cheering, hands in the air, everyone on their feet at once. My instinct in a moment like that is not to jump onto the next event scheduled to happen. It is to read the room, find the best angle, and let it happen exactly as it wants to.

This is something I think about at every wedding, not just the big scripted moments. Weddings are full of instants that only exist for a second, a guest's reaction the moment a couple is announced as married, a parent wiping their eyes, a whole room erupting at once. My job is to notice when one of these moments is about to happen and position myself to catch it, without ever stepping into it and changing what it would have been anyway.

That kind of attentiveness is not something I can plan for in advance. It comes from staying present and paying close attention all day long, so nothing catches me off guard when it matters.
