Yesterday was harrowing. It was the first time we were able to get up to Altadena and see our property. Our neighborhood is unrecognizable. The initial, heaving sobs that took my breath away quickly turned into a numb feeling and disbelief at the devastation. But despite all this, it still felt like home.

The walls of our house collapsed inward and took everything. Books, a 26 year old vinyl collection, Tom’s tremendous studio, instruments, gear, my lovely plant babies, years of collected crafts, wool, thread, beads, my jewelry making supplies, trinkets from everywhere, friends’ artwork, and the best nap taking couch in the world. Amid the ash there are a few recognizable items: a soapstone statuette on the mantel, that ubiquitous IKEA tea light lantern in the fireplace, a WWI helmet from my Grandfather’s hat collection, a mixing bowl, and my cheese grater!

We were so in love with our little home. It was cozy, warm, and hopefully welcoming to everyone who walked through our door. We will collect again, we will replace, and we will rebuild. We are STILL in love with Altadena. It is a magical place and we are heartbroken for our friends, neighbors, and community. We are so incredibly lucky to have the support network that we do and better means than most, but this will still be a very long and arduous road for everyone affected. To the folks of LA and beyond that have stepped up, thank you!! Please keep telling people’s stories, keep mobilizing, and keep being kind to each other. Help will still be needed in the weeks and months from now. This is Elly or Ellē (I’ve never really been sure how to spell his name). We’ve been friends for a very, very long time. My sister and some of my aunties (who won’t be named 😉) used to tease (and torture) me by holding him captive, hiding him, and I’m pretty sure he got tossed onto a roof at some point.

About 40 years ago, he was the only thing I grabbed when I ran out of the house fire that destroyed my parents’ home. A week ago, he was one of the first things I put into a bag before we left our home in Altadena. What a lucky little shit.

I haven’t posted a lot about my personal feelings on what’s happening. I’ll get to that at some point. I mainly just wanted to post a picture of my raggedy, cute-ass stuffed animal to say thank you, THANK YOU! Also, keep the kids who have been affected by this in your thoughts, some probably didn’t have time to grab their favorite one.
