The following isn't a cover story. It isn't a promotional piece. It isn't a photo essay.

It's a tribute, a memory, an ode to nostalgia, music, Indian Rock n Roll, Rock Machine, Indus Creed, Rang Bhavan, & a brother, Mahesh Tinaikar.

It's a personal account belonging to Debolin Sen, I've just helped assemble it for him.

There are musicians you admire from a distance, and then there are those who become part of your life without ever knowing you exist.

For me, Mahesh Tinaikar was one of the latter.

I remember watching him play at Rang Bhavan in Bombay in the late eighties and early nineties. And then later when Independence Rock was resurrected in 2022. The energy, the sound of the guitar, the sheer command he had on stage. He could make those six strings sing, scream and soar, and leave you wondering how one person could coax so much out of an instrument.

I didn’t know Mahesh personally. I was one of the many people who watched him play, listened to his music and carried those memories away. But when someone like him passes, the loss can feel surprisingly personal.

You are not mourning a friendship. You are mourning a part of your own history.

To understand what Mahesh meant to a generation, it helps to remember what Indian rock was like when Rock Machine emerged.

In the eighties, many of us discovered rock through records and cassettes, listening to Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, The Who, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Van Halen, Rush and many others. We learnt the riffs, air-guitared, argued about musicians and dreamed of the concerts we read about or heard on records. But there was a considerable distance between listening to international rock bands and imagining that Indian musicians could make their own mark in the same world.

There were few established avenues for original rock music, limited recording opportunities and no well-developed industry waiting to support a band. The musicians who took up the challenge had to build much of that world themselves.

An ode to Steven Tyler, the man I admire,
Ever since I first laid ears on tracks like 'Crazy', 'Cryin' & 'Angel' as a pre-teen, finding & binding & whiling away my time through the dizzy haze of the nineties, honing desire, searching for heroes that could hold a tune, and capture that child-like fantasy & imagination....

Aerosmith meant so much more to me than just those nostalgic pop culture MTV Music Videos, colored anachronistically bright, by Silverstone & Liv Tyler.

It took me back to simpler times of skipping school, and running off inter-state with a mate, destined to test every inch of our fate, challenging time & space by running in endless circles, a cacophony of desire, wildfire... We'd pack our bags and fly to Bangalore, to watch Aerosmith Live, but also follow every trace of where they'd stay, cold call random hotels, drive around in endless freefall hoping we'd probably catch a tiny glimpse in our hopeless pursuit of an eternal calling to discover & find something.....

I probably made a jack*** of myself alongside a bunch of otherwise, level headed-peers, as we screamed out "Tyler"... The tires wheeled on, the cars kepta' rollin', but somewhere in the distance, you called out to the driver to take it in reverse, and rolled down the window, to our absolute amaze!!!

Just a bunch of us starry-eyed fans, trying to get out just about anything, from our pockets,to be autographed. It was a hanky for me, in true rock n roll folklore, for a girl I'd never again see, that piece of cloth blown off in the wind, forevermore!....but that memory, of that camaraderie, etched in my mind's eye, forever!

Not sure if this is the right platform or channel to display it on, but I wanted to share some artwork, a painting, acrylic on canvas, that I made of & for you, Steven Tyler... And some Tibetan syringe wood-art for the band.

Having traversed through the Aerosmith musical archives, the glam power ballads of the 80's, the frenetically ageless bluesy rock n roll riffs of the 70's courtesy Joe Perry, it was now time to read your autobiography, 'Noise in my Head'.
