A good listen coming up on Friday August 21, 2026 at 12 noon: Animal Rights, Eggs, and Feminism

In the first half of the program, philosopher Robert Jones welcomes fellow philosopher and critical theorist John Sanbonmatsu for a discussion of his book, The Omnivore’s Deception: What We Get Wrong about Meat, Animals, and Ourselves, arguing that feminists should support animal rights.

In the second half of the show, Robert speaks with veterinarian and animal rights activists Dr. Crystal Heath, DVM, founder of Our Honor, about why cage-free eggs are nothing more than a marketing scam.

Made some pumpkin cheesecake protein muffins with a recipe from @veganproteins! I’ve been trying to increase my protein intake, and these are helpful! Recipe was easy — just search their YT channel for the video posted on 10/22/2025. #chicovegan by @chicovegan

A family favorite since 1996 - Joanne Stepaniak’s Chuckwagon Stew from her Vegan Vittles cookbook. Last night’s version used a bag of Beyond Beef “steak tips” and was topped off with some biscuits as quickie “dumplings.” It was a perfect Sunday night dinner! 8/23/2025 - I headed into downtown Chico to get some Indian food, but they were closed, so I ended up trying @masamormexicanfood (formerly Sultan's Bistro, downstairs from Broadway Heights at 3rd and Broadway) - their rice, pinto beans, and housemade guacamole are all vegan and all delicious!

The guacamole was very tangy and delicious -- so I even doublechecked with the server to see if there was any sour cream in it and she said definitively no. The beans in the burrito were housemade whole pinto beans, served with a side of mild and tangy tomatillo salsa.

I ordered the Veggie Burrito (hold the cheese, hold the sour cream) and an order of Mas Amor guacamole and chips (both were $14.59 - !!).

The burrito was enormous - very shareable! It's a little pricy, but a nice change from my usual Aca Taco burrito!

Nice sammich with lightly fried Unmeat “Spam” dupe (vegan of course!) on a toasted roll with Vegenaise, pickled carrots and radishes, some sautéed trumpet mushrooms, and a drizzle of soy sauce on the bun. Not too bad! The can of “spam” was US$6.79, but sliced up into six portions. taken in Chico, California by @chicovegan

I just took a quick (hot) trip up to Redding after learning about an Ethiopian restaurant up there. Lalibela Ethiopian Cuisine sells food at the Saturday Redding Farmers market and at a commercial kitchen/restaurant (table service!) on Sundays from 12-5 pm.

The food was great! Because they’re only open two days a week, everything is made fresh. They even make their own injera — from 100% teff, no added wheat flour.

Sharing an update from the Chico Vegan FB group. Special sandwich alert! There are extra vegan sandwiches at Ike’s Sandwiches while Ike is visiting... and a secret(ish) menu, including vegan Tikka masala, pepperoni pizza sandwich, and a Thai curry sandwich.
