A great question was asked on forum which gather the usual response to this question with statistics or preferences, but there were some great answers, so I thought I would share my reply for your edification 😎

“What distance is best to train at relative to probable need?”

There’s no single “best” distance. The best distance to train at is the one where your skills start to break down, and you won’t know where that is until you test it under realistic conditions.

Most of us know our range standing still on a square range. That’s not the number that matters. Your real maximum effective range is what you can do while moving, using cover, and making decisions. Find that edge, because it tells you when to engage, when to close distance, and when to get out.

Don’t skip the other end, either. Close-range work (retention, compression, extension) has to be trained with movement too. Most fights happen close, and close is where people fall apart.

Start at contact distance, work outward until your hits fall apart, and train right at that edge. That’s where skill, confidence, and good decisions get built.#hecklerandkoch #phlster #holosun by @chiefchaoscontroller

Shot calling is essential for staying in the process, so I call the points as I shoot them instead of looking at the target. I listed my calls first, along with the cumulative points earned, noting the difference from the actual points. This drives interest in the process, not the outcome. My errors were directly related to my mind shifting to a perfect score, which caused tension. I will be teaching advanced shot calling in all three modes (accuracy, speed, and performance) at the Quest.

Bullseye Phase 1
5-10-15-20-25 yards
From the draw, fire 1-2-3 shots at each distance, no time limit (30 rounds total).
Target is a B-8 repair center; misses off the target are 10 points down.
