Wow. What a wild two weeks.

Between media interviews, event planning, and the general chaos leading up to our theatrical premiere at @viffest Theatre— I hadn’t had a chance to just land.

I sat alone in the dark theatre during tech check and watched Spring After Spring. I was overwhelmed with emotions. It was exactly how I wanted it to be seen. I had a realization: we did it. It’s done.

I’m so grateful for every note, message, and reaction from those who’ve watched the film. This carousel is a little recap of the last two weeks.

Two screenings left before Spring After Spring goes live on @knowledgenetwork across the country on Feb 17.

Last weekend Cold Tea Collective kicked off the theatrical run of “Spring After Spring”, a feature length documentary film by Chinese-Peruvian Canadian filmmaker Jon Chiang (@jonchiang).

After their mother’s death, three sisters reunite to lead Vancouver’s Chinatown Parade, forced to choose between honoring their past and letting it go.

At the sold-out VIP screening, our founder Natasha Jung moderated a post-screening panel with sisters Anabel and Lisa Ho and Jon Chiang.

Canadian Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism & Sport, Anne Kang, shared remarks alongside Knowledge Network President & CEO, Michelle van Beusekom and producer Joanna Wong.

BTS from 1 year ago. Celebrating the last day of filming Spring After Spring with a dance lesson from @anabelho.vad, @msveeproductions and @lisaho180.

We just finished a 14 hour day in Vancouver’s biggest snowfall. 4 cameras, 3 sound mixers, 2 steadicams and 15 incredible crew:

It took 5 years to make Spring After Spring. Year 3 almost killed it.

It started with 3 sisters wanting to honor their late mother. Filmed a teaser in year 2.

I pitched for 7 months in year 3 to literally every Canadian broadcast partner and funder. I almost shelved it, but decided to apply for the BIPOC development grant with Knowledge Network the day before the deadline. They green lit development.

One more round of development. A greenlight on production.

2 months filming. 7 months in post production. By the end, it was the first time I truly felt like a director.

Today? Two sold-out screenings and five more at VIFF Centre. Catch it on the big screen before it streams on Knowledge LNY day, Feb 17.

Social media makes filmmaking look really glamorous.

It’s not.

Making Spring After Spring was 5 years of funding rejections, self-doubt, and wondering at many points, ‘do we have a film?’

But it dawned on me, sitting at @elementalpost, listening to the film’s climax for the literal thousandth time, and chills ran down my back. The moment still moved me.

That’s when I knew we had made something special.

Spring After Spring is my first feature documentary. It follows three sisters navigating grief and legacy after losing their mother—Mimie Ho, a Vancouver Chinatown legend who organized dancers in the Lunar New Year Parade for over 40 years.

It won Best Canadian Feature at @vaffvancouver. And it screening in Vancouver for two weeks before streaming on @knowledgenetwork across Canada.

@joannaclairewong and I did not expect this and didn’t prepare a proper thank you - so here it goes:

Thank you VAFF for being such a support to our West Coast Asian Film Community. They screened my first doc, The Lion and it’s where I’ve met so many people in the film community I call friends.
