for machete and electric guitar Practicing with my father’s old work machete for an upcoming performance of Shitcook, a guitar noise project I started over 20 years ago and recently revived as a duo with Justice Northrup. This project has reignited my interest in volume, feedback, and the electronic six string. Big thanks to my good bud Jordan Hines for lending me this fiery metal machine. Such a great guitar. In case anyone is interesting, I posted a four minute version of this piece on YouTube. Check it out. ✌️❤️#noise #guitarsolo #preparedguitar #freeimprovisation #outsiderblues by @chikwhite

I’m playing my first solo show around here in a few years, at the most charming venue in the province. Hope to see a few of you folks there. Ticket link in profile. —- chik white absurdist voice, guitar, jaw harp & film Steeple Green Books 26 East Petpeswick Road, Musquodoboit Harbour (30 min from Halifax) November 14, 7:30pm $15 advance / $20 door  —- chik white is the alias of Chezzetcook-based musician, improviser, and performance artist Darcy Spidle. While best known for his avant-garde work with the jaw harp, his practice has expanded to include guitar, voice, nose flutes, horns, and video. He has released numerous albums on labels such as Kraak, Notice, Feeding Tube, Full Spectrum, and Sound Holes. His collaborators include Bill Nace, Chad VanGaalen, Xuan Ye, Colin Fisher, Daniel Tapper, Naomi McCarroll-Butler, and Bekah Simms.   Over the last decade, Spidle has toured Europe and Canada several times. Notable performances include a solo concert atop a 16th-century tower in Bologna, Italy, and the premiere of Spore Wind, a contemporary classical jaw harp concerto by Juno Award-winning composer Bekah Simms, presented by Continuum in Toronto. His most recent performances have shifted towards freeform voice and untuned acoustic guitar, with an emphasis on feral absurdity and freedom. In 2026, he played Colour Out of Space Festival in Brighton, UK, and Jauna Muzika in Vilnius, Lithuania, along with numerous other stops across Europe. “Abnormal and Astonishing.” — Pan M 360 “A modern avant-indie folk god in the making.” — Anthony Fantano “…like some subterranean folklore you never knew you needed in your life.” — The Tone Arm “Some passages are so glumpsy they are hilarious, others have a darkly industrial vibe, and the bulk is righteously freaked. A fine thing.” — The Wire by @chikwhite
