🎙On my latest podcast I chatted with Alex Kopelman about helping children remain their authentic selves in today's world.

Alex's book, "For Real: Helping Children Remain Their Authentic Selves In A Limiting World", focuses on how our children are born with an authentic self that gets socialized out of them. Through messages they hear from parents, classrooms, culture and beyond, children start to hide parts of themselves as a way to belong and survive. However, Alex also states that the change needs to begin with parents, or at least in a parallel process of dropping many of the “oughts and shoulds” of parenthood too. Listen in to learn more about the distinction he makes between just allowing a child to run wild and undisciplined versus encouraging them to be authentic while also learning how to get along with others.

As parents, it can be hard to step away from the idea of being perfect. In conversation with Cara of Atl&Co, Alex talked about how it is more important to be present than perfect, how perfection is the opposite of authenticity, and how we can listen to our children to act as developmental partners as they get a sense of who they are and how they want to live.

"When we strive to be perfect, we tend to focus on some external ideal - some yardstick that we get along the way - without really examining where it comes from. When we step away from that and focus on being present with our kids, we have the opportunity to see who they are. Each child comes with their own instruction manual that they can share with us as long as we have the patience and sense of calm to listen to what they have to say.” - Alexander Kopelman

Our teenagers are watching us closely, even when it doesn’t look like it.

Alex will be joining the Parents’ Coalition of Bay Area High Schools for an interactive evening for parents: Becoming the Adults Our Teenagers Want to Talk To.

This isn’t a lecture about fixing your teen. It’s a chance to look in the mirror together and ask: what do they see when they look at us?

Together we’ll:
• Create self-portraits of ourselves as teenagers and as the adults we are today
• Map the people, events and messages that shaped us
• Step inside a teenager’s world
• Practice the habits of a caring adult, from listening to a simple daily reflection

You’ll leave with practical tools you can use at the dinner table, in the car, or in the quiet moments in between. Teens who have at least one caring adult who genuinely sees them develop greater resilience, stronger mental health, and healthier relationships. Every parent can be that adult.

Open to all parents. Bring a friend, a partner, or another parent you know.
