“You cannot shave a person’s head in their absence.”

For @chinyere.eyoh, that Nigerian proverb says everything about how change has to happen: women and girls need to be part of shaping the response to the violence they experience.

A survivor of childhood sexual abuse, Chinyere founded @soar.initiative to help girls recognize violence, speak up and shape the response around them.

With support from the @untrustfundevaw, @soar.initiative tested and later adapted its community-based model to displacement settings in Benue State, reaching around 1,900 displaced adolescent girls.

Communities that once treated sexual violence as a private family matter began referring survivors for support, and women took leadership roles in child-protection committees.

“They believed in our potential before there was any evidence for it.”

---

With the #InternationalDayOfTheGirl just around the corner, Chinyere's story speaks to a simple idea: girls cannot be protected if they are excluded from the decisions that shape their lives.

30 years. 30 Voices of Change. This is Chinyere Eyoh.

@chinyere.eyoh, Founder and Executive Director of @soar.initiative, has more than 25 years of experience in child protection advocacy, community mobilization and survivor support. A survivor advocate and author, she founded SOAR in 2011 to support child and adolescent survivors and advance community-led approaches to preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence.

My teenagers made this a couple of weeks ago and I can't stop laughing 😂😂

What do you think, do I say these things 🤔👀 by @chinyere.eyoh

50 never looked better🔥🔥🔥

I’m grateful to everyone who took their time to celebrate me on my 50th birthday. It was indeed a memorable day; everything I wanted and more.

I’m grateful for all the love and support shown to me most especially to my mum and my family that supported me. I’m thankful to every teenager that I once mentored for showing up and being present.

I’m eternally grateful to God for sustaining my life, for preserving me and for giving me a reason to rejoice and celebrate.

May we continually have reasons to rejoice and be glad.

Loving a teenager and understanding a teenager are not always the same thing🤔

Sometimes, we are unsure how to respond when they withdraw, challenge us, make decisions we do not understand or they seem to just begin to change before our eyes 😔

We honestly want to do better than the adults who raised us, but discover that certain reactions and patterns are harder to change than we imagined.

But then you do not have to be struggling with your teenager to want to understand them better. You may simply just want to prepare for the years ahead or become a more effective adult in the lives of the young people around you.

Now this is why I am excited to introduce THRIVE WITH TEENS the maiden learning experience of @teensthriveafricahq

It is a two-day, practical and interactive workshop for parents, caregivers, mentors, educators and everyone who loves or works with teenagers.

Together, we will explore adolescent development, communication, boundaries, the influence of our own upbringing, emotional wellbeing and how to support teenagers as they grow towards responsible independence.

This will not be two days of simply listening to presentations. We will reflect, discuss real-life scenarios, practise new approaches and leave with practical tools we can use.

📍 Abuja
📅 27–28 November 2026
🎟️ Founding Cohort Rate: ₦30,000, subject to the introductory registration deadline.

Check the link in the bio to register and save yourself a slot at this meeting then share this invitation with a parent, teacher, mentor or youth worker who should be part of the conversation.

MOTHERS, OUR GIRLS NEED MORE THAN PROTECTION. THEY NEED CONNECTION. ❤️

In a conversation with community women, we explored a critical question: Are we close enough to our daughters to know when something is wrong?

In communal living, where children interact with many adults, protecting our girls from sexual violence takes more than telling them to be careful. It requires presence, open communication, attentive parenting, and the courage to break the silence.

❤️ Listen without judgment.
❤️ Stop comparing your daughter to other children.
❤️ Make time to connect, even when life is demanding.
❤️ Create a home where she can speak up without fear of blame or punishment.

A girl who knows she can talk to her mother is better placed to seek help when something feels wrong.

Mums, let’s raise daughters who know they are loved, heard, believed, and protected. Our silence can leave them vulnerable; our connection can help keep them safe. by @chinyere.eyoh

At the Law Students in Justice Conference, held in Abuja, by @kene_agwu I had the privilege of speaking as Executive Director of SOAR Initiative on “Access to Justice for the Vulnerable: Rethinking Service Delivery and Intervention Approaches.”

My message was simple: justice must protect, not retraumatise. For survivors of sexual violence and other vulnerable persons, the journey from disclosure to protection, justice and recovery must be safe, dignified and survivor-centred.

We must move beyond good laws to compassionate service delivery, effective referrals and accountable institutions.

Justice is not complete until the vulnerable can access it with dignity. 👩🏽‍⚖️ by @chinyere.eyoh

Teenagers are navigating a lot as they try to discover who they are, find out where they belong, manage emotions, build relationships and make decisions in a constantly changing world.

But then the adults who love and guide them need support, too. 💚🧡

That’s why Teens Thrive Africa™ exists!

We create interactive courses, workshops, masterclasses and learning experiences that help teenagers build the skills, confidence and self-understanding to thrive and lead with purpose, while equipping parents, caregivers, educators, mentors and youth leaders to support them with greater understanding and confidence.

This is because raising teenagers is more than telling them what to do. It’s about helping them think critically, make sound choices, build healthy relationships and navigate life’s challenges, with adults who know how to guide them holding them accountable.

Follow us for practical insights, upcoming programmes and meaningful conversations about teenagers and the adults who walk alongside them.

💬 Let’s start here: What do you think teenagers need MORE of from the adults in their lives?

📌 📌📌 Glad to be invited to share on this very sticky but most needed topic. Our children and teenagers need to hear this from home before anywhere else.
