Who says the garden is done by September? In the dry garden these gorgeous blue asters, autumn joy sedum, and creeping thyme beckon you for a walk through the woodland, where a mature limelight hydrangea (a gift from our neighbour after we moved in—we hauled it over and yes, it was heavy!) takes centre stage. Quiet evening in the potager. We used a mix of annuals and herbs with a few vegetables this summer to see if the companion flowering plants helped reduce insects. I’m not sure it made that much difference for us to have them in the beds right among the vegetables versus nearby in the ground. Since it’s such a small space, we’ll probably move the flowers mostly to the surrounding in-ground beds next year so that there’s room for more veg. And also next year, hopefully we’ll get our first crop of asparagus and apples! In very large gardens it makes sense to plant in drifts for impact and sweep. In our more modest city garden, we’re finding that just one large-scale plant like an "Autumn Joy" sedum, stachys "Big Ears", a tall grass, or a large dahlia can make quite a big impact when placed among the smaller plantings and mature supporting shrubs that back this existing bed that is being gradually reworked over a few years. We were extremely fortunate to have many mature plantings that could offer structure when we began to modify this bed a couple of years ago.
