What happens when everyday people are armed with curiosity? 🌱🔬

Science moves out of the isolated towers and into our community. At ChiTownBio, we believe the knowledge to nurture and multiply life belongs to everyone.

From metabolic engineering to bioart, and from tissue-cultured plants to mushroom spawn, we are building a "mycelial web" of knowledge across Chicago. Every workshop in our Rogers Park lab bridges the gap between STEM and the public, creating a future where everyone can participate in ecological resilience.

As we approach Giving Tuesday, we are reflecting on the incredible work we’ve accomplished with your support. We are ready to make 2026 our most impactful year yet—but we need you to help us grow.

Our first Chicago Open Bioinformatics event was a success! We had a great first meeting last month, and we’re looking forward to the next. Join us on October 22 for some brief presentations, followed by a bit of co-working. This group is still new, so please make sure you come and let us know how best we can serve the community’s needs. by @chitownbio

We’ll be joined by @chitownbio scientist + professor Dr. Andy Scarpelli for a hands-on nature hunt uncovering real-life “superpowers” that help plants and wildlife thrive along our shoreline. Then, we’ll put our own superpowers to work with a family-friendly beach clean-up in support of the @alliance4greatlakes

📍Montrose Beach
September 20 • 10-11:30am
🌱All are welcome

Come get a little sandy, learn something new and leave the beach a little better than we found it.

Part of our monthly Little Oak family meet-ups launched during @chiclimateweek — getting kids outside, connecting families + discovering some of the wonderful people and organisations caring for our planet and city.

We are still looking for applications to expand our board, particularly for people with experience with volunteer management, nonprofit finances, and/or running a lab. We are grateful to everyone who has applied, and will close the application on September 19th. Link to the application is in our bio! Questions? Please email andy@chitownbio.org. by @chitownbio
