Sawen Kramawitana was known to walk barefoot, even in Paramaribo. He told his grandchildren stories, most prefereably about Gunung Slamet in Central Java.

The Kromowidjojo family, then still Kramawitana — arrived in Suriname in 1928. Like many others, they signed a contract that bound them to at least five years of labour on one of the colony’s plantations.
People who travelled on the same ship often became jaji: a close-knit family. Ties formed not by blood, but by shared crossing. They carried language, habits, and fragments of Java with them. 🌏

For many, the connection to home slowly faded. Distance and time made it difficult to maintain contact. What remained were stories. Stories such as those of bapak Sawen.
In 1954, he changed his name to Kromowidjojo.
The second photograph shows Sawen at the start of this journey: taken as part of his labour contract. He arrived in 1928 aboard the steamship Sembilan. At the same ship: Bok Tjewo. She became his much younger wife. It is said Sawen left a family behind in Java. What became of them is unknown.

The journey from Batavia to Suriname took weeks.
In 2024, nearly a century later, the Kromowidjojo family returned to Java to visit their ancestral village. Among them was Sawen’s great-granddaughter, triple Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo. 🥇 The source: personal research by great-grandson @chjanoy Kromowidjojo 🔍 taken in Paramaribo, Suriname by @chjanoy

25 november 2025 marks 50 years of independence of Suriname. Right before the independence in 1975 my grandparents decided to go to the Netherlands with their 9 kids. My father - their oldest son - was the last one to move from the tropical part of the kingdom to the cold part: the Netherlands. Aged 21 and with just 1 Surinamese guilder. Born on a plantation and raised in the though neighbourhoods of Paramaribo. Speaking 3 languages: Javanese at home, Dutch at school and Surinamese as the lingua franca on the streets. Following the rest of the family, on to a new future. Meanwhile 50 years in the Netherlands.

I’m not sure if I need to celebrate Srefidensi (the independence) but I do know that I’m thankful for and respect the choice of my grandparents to emigrate to the Netherlands. I could write so much more about this part of my family history. So if you have any questions, let me know in the comments below.

Yesterday, 9 august 2025 marked the day of 135 years of Javanese immigration to Suriname. Four of them were my greatgrandparents. The Kromosemito’s, my grandmothers parents, arrived in 1919. The Kromowidjojo’s (Kramawitana) in 1928. They were forced to sign a contract for at least 5 years of hard labour at 1 of the many plantation in Suriname under harsh conditions.

People who travelled on the same ship became jaji, or ‘adapted’ family. Many of them preserved their culture and habits they took from the motherland. Some of them returned to Java but most of them stayed in Suriname. The direct connection with their home got lost since they were far away from home and couldn’t write or read. The exact story of how they ended up in Suriname will stay unknown.

1. The photo they took of my greatgrandfather Sawen Kramawitana as part of his labour contract. He arrived in 1928 on the same ship as his much younger wife Bok Tjewo. Story goes that he already had a family on Java but we don’t know anything about it.

It took weeks before the steamship Sembilan arrived from Batavia (Jakarta) in Suriname. The ship was build in the Netherlands (in the of Amsterdam where I live nowadays) and in 1943 it got hit by a torpedo of the Italian navy during WW2 and sank.

2. Always walking on bear feet, even in the city of Paramaribo. He told his grandkids about the Gunung Slamet in Central-Java.

Meanwhile he changed his last name to Kromowidjojo in 1954. We don’t know why.

In that same year my father was born. And Suriname became a country within the kingdom of the Netherlands instead of a colony.

3. The family of Poniman Kromowidjojo, his oldest son who eventually got a family of nine children himself. On the left my father. In 1975 the whole family emigrated to the Netherlands right before the independence of Suriname. My father was the last one to arrive in October ‘75.

4. Visiting the village of Sawen Kramawitana on central Java in 2024 with my parents @rudikromo , sister @ranomikromo and brother in law @veryferryfast

In 2019 I already made a solo trip to find the villages of the greatgrandparents. The goal was to comeback with my parents and sister. And so we did! by @chjanoy
