🌿 9 AUGUSTUS — EEN WANDELING DOOR 136 JAAR GESCHIEDENIS

Gistermorgen liepen we samen stil door het Amsterdamse Oostelijk Havengebied.

Een wandeling ter herdenking van 136 jaar Surinaams-Javaanse geschiedenis. Een geschiedenis die begon met de aankomst van de Javaanse contractarbeiders, maar die verder gaat dan jaartallen en gebeurtenissen.

We stonden stil bij de mensen achter het verhaal. Bij hun reis, hun strijd, hun verdriet en hun veerkracht.

En bij het bijzondere verhaal van Chjanoy Kromowidjojo, dat ons opnieuw liet zien hoe geschiedenis door mensen wordt gedragen en doorgegeven.

Vandaag kijken we terug.
Niet om in het verleden te blijven, maar om te begrijpen waar we vandaan komen.

Om te herinneren. Om te erkennen. Om door te geven.

Want wat niet wordt verteld, kan worden vergeten.
En wat wordt doorgegeven, blijft leven. 🕊️

Waterkant is named after the Waterkant in Paramaribo, Suriname. A place that brings people together today, but carries a history that should never be forgotten. It was where thousands of enslaved people first arrived on shore, followed later by thousands of contract workers.

We honor that history and the people whose strength and resilience continue to shape generations.

Sawen Kramawitana was known to walk barefoot, even in Paramaribo. He told his grandchildren stories, most prefereably about Gunung Slamet in Central Java.

The Kromowidjojo family, then still Kramawitana — arrived in Suriname in 1928. Like many others, they signed a contract that bound them to at least five years of labour on one of the colony’s plantations.
People who travelled on the same ship often became jaji: a close-knit family. Ties formed not by blood, but by shared crossing. They carried language, habits, and fragments of Java with them. 🌏

For many, the connection to home slowly faded. Distance and time made it difficult to maintain contact. What remained were stories. Stories such as those of bapak Sawen.
In 1954, he changed his name to Kromowidjojo.
The second photograph shows Sawen at the start of this journey: taken as part of his labour contract. He arrived in 1928 aboard the steamship Sembilan. At the same ship: Bok Tjewo. She became his much younger wife. It is said Sawen left a family behind in Java. What became of them is unknown.

The journey from Batavia to Suriname took weeks.
In 2024, nearly a century later, the Kromowidjojo family returned to Java to visit their ancestral village. Among them was Sawen’s great-granddaughter, triple Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo. 🥇 The source: personal research by great-grandson @chjanoy Kromowidjojo 🔍

💛🇸🇷Festival: De Nieuwe Generaties van Suriname WAS ONE FOR THE BOOKS! 💛🇸🇷

We kwamen samen in een uitverkocht Felix Meritis om met jullie de Surinaamse culture te vieren, eren en te voelen. We stapten in de voetsporen van regisseur @amandavanhesteren - maker van de docuserie De Nieuwe Generaties van Suriname - en kwamen samen om te verdiepen, uit te wisselen en Sfrefidensi te vieren.

Dank voor iedereen die deze bijzondere dag met ons heeft gedeeld. En natuurlijk dank aan onze community, artiesten en sprekers die deze dag zo speciaal hebben gemaakt 🤍

Based on research, Chjanoy Kromowidjojo is of Javanese descent. He is the older brother of Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo, who is also of Javanese descent.

His family background is as follows:

• His grandfather : came from Java and was brought to Suriname by the Dutch Colonial Government in the 19th century to work on the plantation.

• His father, Rudi Kromowidjojo,
was born in Suriname and later moved
to the Netherlands.

• He and his younger sisters :
Chjanoy and Ranomi were born
and raised in the Netherlands to a father
of Javanese-Surinamese descent.

But Java belongs to Indonesia🇮🇩
