This past weekend I spent the day coaching people on camera, from over the operator's shoulder, trying to help them make a room feel something.

In the wrestling business it's called 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘀. A promo is the moment a character talks to the audience and the audience decides whether they care. So you're digging into motivation. What does this person want, and what has it cost them to want it.

I'm not a director. Nowhere near. I stand behind Chloe and look through the viewfinder with her, because if I'm off to the side in any direction I'm just a distraction in someone's eyeline. If I'm going to coach what they're giving the camera, I need to see what the camera sees.

𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸. 𝗜𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹.

My favourite quote is that people won't remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel. I've leaned on that for fifteen years of writing training, and it turns out it's the whole job here too.

I've written plenty of training for billing managers. The first question is always the same. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲? In recruitment the what is easy, it earns you more money. The how is where it gets hard, and that's where most training quietly falls over.

𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. Just louder, and with better lighting.

So I try to give as much time as I can to the wrestlers, crew and volunteers who want the experience. My time, divided by 40+ people, across a six hour event. I don't nail it. Not even close.

But I love what this photo captures. That's what it can take to produce 𝟯𝟬 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Mira has never met a man. Cal has never left The Island. Shipwrecked alone in this magical, solitary place, Mira convinces Cal to help her escape in exchange for her teaching him about the world outside. As they begin to understand each other, something strong and dangerous grows between them. But after a decade apart, that something is broken and the island is crumbling around them.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, WE WILD THINGS explores the cost of losing the people who define you. This feminist, lyrical play examines the relationship between desire and power, between men and women, and between the world we live in and the way we treat it.

A joyful day of filming with Laura, Emma and Georgia and the long suffering but so so appreciated Jamie - one of the girls.

Such a fun, creative and silly time getting to work on this brilliant script of Lydia's. Bringing Laura and Emma back from the rehearsed reading we did of it a few years ago and getting to work with the fabulous Georgia for the first time.

Can't wait to start editing it with Jamie who will work his magic ✨

It feels like a nice moment to share this - especially on World Theatre Day!

After the Globe, I was reminded how much I love being in a room with artists just playing. Very much inspired by my time at the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, I wanted to create a space for that — small, intentional, and playful, without pressure or outcomes.

So I started my version of LAB.

Over a handful of sessions, we worked on all sorts of things — Ibsen, Shakespeare, a short story — alongside some more open, devised exploration. Each session was small and intentional, with carefully curated pairings and just enough structure to get us going.

It’s been such a treat. LAB isn’t a class or a project with a specific outcome - it’s a space to try things out, get things wrong, follow instincts, and see what happens in the room. Lots of trust, lots of risk, lots of silliness and loooots of play.

I’ve loved it. Really grateful to everyone who’s come along.

I’ll be looking ahead to a spring block of sessions soon — if you’re curious about joining us, let me know!
