Some of the best documentaries start in places you’d never find on your own. AOD Student Feature @chloekeleny

“I recently had my documentary published by Earthrise and EarthAlliance (Leonardo DiCaprio nonprofit environmental organization). I filmed the documentary solo in Kenya last year. I wanted to share this huge win with you and the AOD community because it’s been instrumental in getting me to where I am today.“

Punga Upepo: The Ngalawa Project is a short documentary following the creation of a traditional ngalawa boat on Kenya’s coast. From its hand-carved-from-a-tree hull to a thirty-foot sail painted by artist Pie Herring, the film connects local craftsmanship and art with the Makongeni Beekeepers—a group of women restoring mangroves, producing honey and building sustainable livelihoods.

“AOD has shaped my filmmaking journey in so many ways. Having such a huge library of videos to turn to whenever I’m unsure of something has given me the confidence to take on projects that once felt intimidating.

The community has been just as valuable I’ve found work, connected with other filmmakers, and learned from their experiences. Even just scrolling through Facebook, an AOD post will leave me with a new idea or the push to work harder. And I love that AOD encourages us to make our passion projects, which is why I wanted to share this film I created, directed, and edited independently knowing I always had AOD to turn to if I needed help.” @chloekeleny

I know we said premiering at the festival tomorrow..but sadly something has changed..

In the build up to the festival we realized we were missing some paperwork and unfortunately we won’t be able to show our film there today. But that’s ok! It’s all a learning experience anyway. And we have another planned for next year already 👀 but that doesn’t mean you don’t get to see it tomorro as promised.

New plan! We are now doing a very exciting online release and I cannot wait 😊

If you haven’t already, DM me your email to added to the list when we send it out tomorrow. Otherwise I can send you the link on IG.

This project has been a labour of love. I filmed it last year and have been waiting for this day for a long time. The editing took a long time because the storyline was so fluid - we met so many interesting people along the way that kept adding to the story. A piece of our story was even picked up by Earthrise to showcase the amazing beekeepers in our film.

I can’t wait for you to watch it! See you tomorrow 👀 taken in Kenya by @chloekeleny

Take photos of strangers isn’t always easy.

And it’s extra hard when you’ve got a language barrier. But never let that stop you because the results are always worth it.

What makes a place isn’t the structure.

The details, the pauses, the way people exist in and around a space. That’s usually where I end up focusing - not on how it looks, but how it feels to be there.

It’s been a year in the making and we’re now absolutely thrilled to share that Punga Upepo will be premiering this July 24th by opening the Diani Film Festival, Kenya 🇰🇪 for ticket info check the link in our bio

At the centre of this story is a wooden fishing boat built by hand using local knowledge passed down through generations. Its sail is painted by artist Pie Herring, whose work helps fund the project and transforms the boat into both a practical tool and a moving piece of art. Once complete, the ngalawa supports local fishermen while also helping fund the work of the Makongeni Beekeepers — a community-led group restoring mangroves, producing honey, and protecting the fragile ecosystem their livelihoods depend on.

Through intimate interviews and observational footage, the film explores the connection between cultural heritage, environmental care, and community resilience. The boat becomes more than an object: it is a symbol of what can happen when creativity is used in service of something larger. Set against the beauty of coastal Kenya, Punga Upepo is a story about tradition, collaboration, and the quiet power of one project to create lasting ripples.
