LA YANGA COSTEÑA
(Costa chica, México)

*The first picture was taken after a scene from the music video "Yanga," a beauty directed by Amaury Barrera and Audrey Del Piccolo as a homage to Gaspar Yanga.

Gaspar Yanga was an African prince enslaved in Veracruz who led a 1570 rebellion and founded the Americas' first free Black town in 1618.

The second and last are backstage portraits of Sami

The fourth photo was my first portrait of her in her village, Collantes, a year before she was chosen for the role."

Those images are part of "Somos Afromexicanas," my 6-year long-term project honoring Afromexican women.
