A concert called Reflections should look and sound like the community it represents. 🩷💚

When we began building Reflections, we knew Reena Esmail’s TaReKiTa belonged at its very center.

Our singers come from communities rich with cultures, languages, traditions, and stories — and South Asian culture is an important part of the community we call home. We wanted this performance to do more than simply include that representation. We wanted to celebrate it.

With its exhilarating rhythms, Hindustani-inspired vocal writing, and incredible energy, TaReKiTa gave our singers the opportunity to step into a musical tradition that is both deeply meaningful to members of our SLYC family and wonderfully different from much of the repertoire traditionally heard on a choral stage.

And with choreography created by Priti Gupta of Saanwee Performing Arts, the piece became one of the true centerpieces of Reflections — a celebration of music, movement, culture, and community.

💗💚 From our home, with love.

When we created Reflections, our spring concert was designed to do exactly what its name suggested: reflect the singers on our stage, the people who surround them, and the community we are so proud to call home.

And for us, home is Virginia. ❤️

From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Shenandoah Valley, these are the places that form the backdrop of our singers’ lives—the places where they grow up, make music, build friendships, and become who they are.

So it felt only right that Reflections included a musical love letter to the great Commonwealth of Virginia.

Today, we’re proud to share SLYC’s premiere ensemble, Summit, performing Derric Johnson’s beautiful arrangement of the American folk song “Shenandoah.” 🎶

This is our home. These are our singers. This is our community.

And we’re proud to share a little piece of it with you. 💗💚

✨ *The steward of your secret dream is YOU, and it always has been.* ✨

At our 2026 spring production, **Reflections**, the South Loudoun Youth Chorale opened with Krishan Oberoi’s (aka @renoirkobashi ) powerful *Intro (It’s You)*—a reminder that within each of us lies the courage, resilience, and potential to shape our own story.

As our singers turned mirrors toward the audience, this moment became more than a performance. It was an invitation to reflect on the dreams we carry, the communities that support us, and the truth that the person capable of making those dreams a reality has been there all along: **you**.

Shout out to Rebecca Rafalko, who dedicated countless hours to supporting SLYC during her Senior Capstone Project. Rebecca attended networking events, contributed to summer camp marketing and assisted with behind-the-scenes projects.
I first taught Rebecca as a freshman in the Freedom High School Chorus, and it has been a joy to watch her grow into a remarkable leader. Throughout her capstone experience, she exemplified SLYC’s core values: Serve, Lead, Spread Joy, and Care.

It was such a joy to visit the Freedom High School choirs Coro Luce and Belle Voce yesterday afternoon! Watching your growth from my first visit, through your Pre-Assessment Concert, to now has been incredible.
A special shoutout to Bass Chorus, who I had the chance to visit before the pre-assessment concert—your performance at Pre-Assessment truly blew me away!

Yesterday I had the absolute joy of visiting Felix Polendey at Parkside Middle School - and honestly, is there ever a dull moment with Felix? Never. 😄
Spending time with him is always a blast, but getting to see the incredible work he’s doing with his students right before assessment week? That’s next-level impressive. The energy, the focus, the fun… it’s all there.

On Monday evening, the South Loudoun Youth Chorale had the privilege of welcoming David Mann as our guest clinician. Earlier this season, Summit had the honor of performing alongside the Voce Chamber Singers at their October concert, and after that experience, we knew we wanted to bring David in to work with our students.
It was inspiring to watch him in action - challenging our singers, offering fresh musical perspectives, and helping them grow in new ways. Opportunities like this remind us how much we all benefit from learning alongside experts in our field.
For me, this was also a meaningful full-circle moment. David and I worked together during his very first year teaching high school chorus, co-leading the Patriot High School choral department with over 300 singers. Seeing his continued impact and growth has been incredible - and in just one week, he’ll officially become Dr. Mann!🎉

I had the pleasure of serving as the sight reading adjudicator for the District 10 High School Choral Assessment last week. It was truly inspiring to witness the incredible work being done by the district’s choral directors.
I also enjoyed reconnecting with fellow stage adjudicators Mac Lambert, Daniel Jackson, and James Wolter - always a highlight!
A heartfelt thank you to my friend Pat Vaughn for the invitation. Watching so many students demonstrate their music literacy skills and seeing the excitement and pride that comes with the assessment experience was incredibly rewarding.
